It’s ridiculous to think that Microsoft is going to develop every driver for 3rd party vendors. They do make a lot of generic drivers, but it’s really HP’s job NOT Microsoft’s. What you suggested is mind boggling…I can’t imagine Microsoft developing 3rd party drivers for every piece of hardware out there…
They have given companies like HP early adaptions of the OS and provided them with development code long before the release of Windows 7. Its HP that has failed to deliver (intentionally it seems).
Try XP mode and see if it helps or better yet, you could buy another printer...

Actually, XP mode for Windows 7 64bit does work with the scanner and fax software. It's a little slow, but it does work.

Consumers shouldn't have to use dated software. We should expect better from HP.

For faxing and scanning I now use the Windows Fax and Scan as the HP software will not operate under Windows 7. It has reduced funtionality to the HP software, but little else to be done due to HP's lack of support for their product.
I still can't believe HPhad the gall to write to me on 29 October 2010 (ref SL3111003567) enclosing a Tax Invoice in the amount of $633.60 to extend support for this product for 12 months, referring to this device as "critical business equipment" and further noting "down time is an avoidable expense". I'm glad I didn't waste my money on this and kept it in the bank to buy a Brother, Toshiba, Samsung, Canon or some other reputable printer in the future!
BTW, this is a HP product support issue, not Microsoft!

After three weeks of trying to work out this problem, I returned the computer and purchased a new computer that still had Windows XP. That solved my problem and I still have my 2840. There are still outlets such as Overstock.Com who have Windows XP. For those people who are stuck and want Windows 7 for some reason, there is no practical solution. Give it up! HP screwed up and they admit it.

There is no equal to HP2840 except for their newer version. Yes, it is slower than some but all in all for clarity and ability to program quality printing, it is the best, in my view. Assuming you need scan and FAX, forget it. Buy a Windows XP and get back to your real life. Next time you purchase a new printer or computer be sure that they are compatible with the equipment you already have. I've learned my lesson. I lost a client and a lot of time trying to work the problem out.

More problems trying to use it without HP software:
1. Windows Fax and Scan solftware will not save documents in pdf format.
2. Nuance PDF Converter finds the printer but can't complete the connection.
Never again!

Trying to solve this problem is a waste of time. I hate to see people try to make their Windows 7 computer compatible with an XP compatible printer such as HP 2840. You are wasting your time and effort. There is no practical solution except to buy an XP computer. You can purchase an inexpensive restored or reconditioned XP computer at various out lets such as Overstock.Com. for as little as $250.00. After the purchase, have your technician transfer all of your files and programs to this inexpensive computer. This computer probably has more capacity than your old one, anyway.
What do you do with the new Windows 7 computer? Assuming you have owned it for less than 90 days, return it and tell the seller that the computer was not compatible with your HP 2840. That should be sufficient reason for a return. Some states have laws which enable you to return a computer within a year. Check with your State Attorney General's office on the matter. Assuming you have legislation which enable you to return the computer within a year, cite the law as provided by your Attorney General. If the seller does not work with you, report them to the Attorney General. This office should help you return the computer to the seller for a full refund.
Clean the hard drive: In fairness, you should have your technician clean the hard drive. This will protect you and the computer. It will also be ready for discount outlets.
Good Luck!
