I was dealing with this same problem earlier in the week, and with a new Windows 7 machine, connecting the USB cable to the 2840 DOES work, and provides full fax and scan via the Microsoft scan and fax software. Unfortunately, there is no way to change the port on the scan and fax to make it work over the network.
Here is what I did:
I started by going to Devices and Printers, and by adding a printer, then network, it will pick up the printer and add it for printing. It seems to work fine, tested it with large and small documents, no problem. I then plugged the laptop into the USB port, and it added a second copy of the printer for the USB connection. That new USB version DID work with Scan and Fax.
Now, I could change the port for the USB version to the same port as the network version, but the scan and fax capability don't move with it because it seems to have hardwired the scan and fax to the USB port, with no way to change it.
Now, it should be noted that the laptop I was doing this on was running Windows 7 32 bit, not 64 bit(Dell has retards who work there too, 32 bit Windows in this day and age?!?). I suspect I will be going back to deal with that issue again at some point, but considering I WAS able to get the scan and fax to work over USB, HP should be able to fix it to work over a network connection.
Like the recent bit about HP dropping WebOS because they are incompetent when it comes to manufacturing devices without taking 8 months from concept to release, HP also seems incapable of using a working USB driver and getting it to work over a network connection, even though it really should not take all that long!

I need help. I have Windows 7 64 bit and the printer was working fine. Then I downloaded a driver to try to get it to work on a network with another computer running Windows XP. Now it doesn't work at all. How do I undo the driver and redo so it will work again on my Windows 7 machine? Thanks.

I've got the driver installed via wireless, then a 2nd driver via USB.
Now how do I get the system to scan?
I tried "Windows Fax & Scan" but didn't work.
Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks

To all of us with the oveerly expensive 2840 All in One printer. Stop buying cartridges, stop buying drums, and most of all, STOP BUYING HP! Spend your money on products from companies whom support their customers through the life of the product. My dad has had the same Lexmark printer through from Windows ME up to Windows 7 and it has worked flawlessly for color, scan, print and Fax. He paid about $90 for it new back then. Yes it may be slow, still use wet ink and not quite what we need in our businesses but what impresses me is the fact that here I sit with a machine I cannot do a damed thing I bought it for, Scan, Fax, and print in color and I will bet that I would have less invested in that machine and wet ink than in the HP 2840 and all the laser cartridges I have bought over the years. I quit buying HP computers over 6 years ago when I had a power plug issue that HP would not warranty repair a notebook after the 4th failure in their repair facility, you know, send it to us and we'll keep it 3 weeks and send it back fixed. The last time the tech on the phone told me that the issue was" logged into the system different every time" and so HP would not warranty repair a $2500 laptop 78 days after it was returned on a 90 day warranty. Right after that I bought 3 Gateways and a non brand name notebooks, 3 desk tops from E-machines and 3 from no names. Guess what the support has been fabulous, up until Gateway went away.
Either way I have vowed---> NOTHING ELSE HP WILL EVER BE BOUGHT BY ME, MY BUSINESS OR MY FAMILY <----
Hp management has not gotten a clue and refuses to support their equipment. So when I heard Hp will "probably be doing away with its compter division" I sang a note of rejoyce. Now when they collapse completely I have no pity for the company When the ink runs out this time, I bought the cartridges thru a refurbish local store, out the door the machime goes and I will buy something from someone other than HP.
Good luck to you all.

I made the same decision as JimMe. However, I have a stock of toner and drums to deplete before I buy another MPD.
