64 bit Windows 7 driver for Atheros AR5007 in dv7-1468nr

I have been in communication with Microsoft and HP technical support both on this issue.

Can we please have a time frame on how long before we will have an actual 64bit driver for the wireless card that is in this model?

I do not mean to sound crass here, but Acer was much easier to work around the driver issue for windows 7.

Microsoft did confirm this evening that there is no 64bit driver for this AR5007 and put it back to HP.

Atheros seems to deal specifically with vendors more than with supporting its prodiucts, so given that this is my return to HP after 6 years of avoidance, and the fact that my company is in the process of hopping through the hoops for the HP Partnership, I would like a straight honest answer from an HP Employee.

How long before this driver is available in 64 bit?

Until such time, the entire product is worthless to me as a professional and as a student for the simple fact that when you attempt to use a required security supplicant for authentication, the netowrk manager crashes when using the 802.1x measure. Microsoft has identified this as specifically a driver related issue because there is no 64 bit driver available.

Not to play one against the other here, but in my profession and in my education, I tend to promote those products which seem to work better and where support is available. The Acer also contained an Atheros card, but it was changed over to use a broadcom driver in Windows 7. No clue why or how, I just know that it works and it supports the Cisco PEAP supplicant which is currently a major issue with the dv7-1468nr and Windows 7 with the Atheros AR5007 wireless device.

There were other related driver issues such as the multimedia remote which was to be expected because windows 7 has not officially released, but when I contacted support about the card reader not functioning (another feature that worked out of the box on Acer hardware), I was told basically sorry charlie, good luck. Luckily I was able to locate an XP driver to make the card reader work. The multimedia remote is a trivial issue, but the wireless is a severe issue. If it can not be resolved in a timely manner, I am afraid I will be boxing this up to return to where it was purchased, as defective. the roll out is in a couple days...

lets hope that we can actually get appropriate drivers by then.

Lets get something straigth first do you have an Atheros AR5007 or an atheros  AR5007 802 11b g, cuz they're a little different ^_^

anyway my my dont be so harsh ^_^ i have exactly the same wireless card as you do, a damned atheros AR5007 802 11b g in a hpdv7-1135nr. and let me tell you what a pain in the ass it has been. i would change it if i had the resources but times are hard man so i have to go for the do it yourself and stick with it even if i dotn want to.

*sigh this is what happens when you trust a computer manufacturer too much... they always end up sticking you with cheap hardware. Anyway lets go to the point.

Last year when Win7 beta was just released i upgraded vista to win7 via its installer and no it was not a clean install i just followed the installer steps and woala!! everything worked perfectly all my drivers including AR5007 802 11b g and all my files were intact. unfortunately back then win7 was in its early beta recently off alpha and it was buggy as hell so i switched back to vista x64.

Now the time has come and i want to upgrade with a clean install to windows 7 my primary concern now is will my wireless work out??

I have 2 things i might such as follow the advice given on this site here

you see as of rigth now i run windows vista ultimate x64 dualboot with a certain linux distro.

In order to set the wireless on the distro im going to be honest with you... it was hell but i managed to fixed it however my linux distro never detected an atheros AR5007 but an atheros AR242x and its drivers can be downloaded here

The driver posted is for the AR5006 and will not function in this machine even after a forced install.

I was left to roll back to the original semi functional driver and now sort out why the on / off switch is now dysfunctional.

As for the .cz hosted drivers, they do not seem to want to make themselves readily available.

I will revert back to what I had and await an appropriate driver.

If one does not come forward in the next 15 days I will simply retrun this dv7 and buy an alternative solution.

This driver which I posted is universal. For all  types of atheros. Have You tested mine or Oglon3r driver?

If You have problems with wireless switch button. Then uninstall HP Quick Lunch Buttons which You have installed and try this one here . This is version for Win7.

Please accept my apologies for the lack of clarity.

I tried to obtain the  Oglon3r driver. I am unable to actually obtain the file. I was able to copy the text file and it does register as a universal Atheros driver file, but it comes up as missing a file while trying to actually install the driver.

I also tried the other file but that is the one that only registered as an AR5006 driver.

I was not trying to seem ungrateful. Additionally I was on the phone with HP at the same time while also jockeying a few business calls around.

Not that it holds a ton of weight but I was advised that following the official release date the drvier files should become more readiliy available.

Please note that the wireless does work it just does not provide for the necessary security measures required to utilize the Cisco PEAP supplicant that I am requierd to use for my education, which leaves me sitting isolated, being prompted for a wep key by a network that officially has broadcase turned off, adn is still detected as "other wireless network".

I am simply going to wait it out a few days and see what happens. I do not have the patience of Job.

As for dual booting with Linux, pretty much a piece of cake. It is pretty sad when you buy a new machine and not even 20 minutes out of the box, you blow it away to install it to suit your needs.

You might want to try this site for atheros drivers. Win7 is listed but no mention of 32/64bit. Maybe it has both.

I know that this does not really say much to most of the "Rebel" community, but even today, after Microsoft spent over an hour and a half with a remote session established to this machine, attempting everything that I have attempted already, recreating the errors they are still not able to provide any form of resolve. I thought I knew my way around the Microsoft environment pretty well, until today.

It actually makes me appreciate the composure of my chosen Linux distributions.

I will take a look at the proposed driver tgell, thank you.

remember my issue is not one of general connectivity though, it is one involving use of industry authentication protocols.

While talking with Microsoft today, we did manage to establish that Cisco's PEAP supplicant does properly install, even though the installer typically produces a compatibility error even when executed as administrator in Windows XP sp2 mode.

We ran "verifier" to check for unsigned defective drivers, and none were found. They dove into system processes and a few other things and turns out this is not the only odd issue that they find with this machine. The LAN connection does not appear where it should as it should either, though functional.

I will post back more tomorrow after our third remote session, if we are able to get the issue resolved. As I have told Microsoft and HP both, not to play one manufacturer against the other, and I do realize the platform differences between 32 bit and 64 bit... My old Acer 5610z which came stock with an Atheros chip, runs windows 7 professional using a broadcom driver for the wireless without incident and it allows the PEAP supplicant to function as it should.

I know of a Dell that has the exact same issue with windows 7 professional, and guess what... same wireless chip .

Worst case senario, you could purchase a Atheros AR9280 802.11a/b/g/n mini pcicard. I do know that hp does not let you install cards from different chip makers: for some reason its locked in the BIOS . Could not find a service manual on this machine to see if the AR9820 could also be used but the 9280 should work . You can find these on EBay for $20 dollars with free shipping. Download and install the atheros drivers for the 9820 chip. Hope this helps.
