Cannot conect to the internet on a open wireless (Local Access Only)

Hi everyone.  We just bought a Compaq CQ50 Notebook and it doesn't conect to the internet, it only stays Local access only.  We have another laptop (Dell) at the house that doesn't have any problems conecting to the internet.  Can anybody help me?
