My build in wireless adapter stopped working, no matter what I do it's toast, light won't come on. I'm experienced enough to open up the laptop and replcae it, my question is if it needs to be the exact same one or can I upgrade to a better one ? Right now it has the Broadcom bcm4308. I looked on Ebay for a replacement and see lots of different ones for HP but not the zd8000 series. My model is the zd8320NR.

You could try going to http://partsurfer.hp.com and getting the wireless adapter direct from HP. At least this way you'd know you have a compatable part for your notebook.

You can check Parts Surfer as the above poster mentioned. If your notebook is in warranty you can also call hp (18004746836) and they will send out a wirelss card for free.
