Compaq CQ56 with Atheros AR9285 wifi problem

[ Edited ]

Hi, I just got this new Compaq Presario CQ56 148-CA everything is working fine exept when I try to connect on my WB-1310 router. it works fine when i'm very near of it. but when I try going into my room or just any other room of the house the wireless just stop working I tried to connect with my nintendo DS to see if it was the router that has a very limited range but my DS connected fine at full signal strengh. Same for my girlfriend's pc and every other wireless thing I tried.

Sometimes I see the network but when I try to connect it says windows was unable to connect to dlink.

most of the times it detects nothing though

My WIFI network adapter is atheros AR9285 with the lastest driver from the compaq website

Router is WB-1310 with latest driver (unsecured network so it is not set on WEP)

Re: Compaq CQ56 with Atheros AR9285 wifi problem

Hey just wondering if you ever got any response/support for your problem?

I have just bought a compaq presario CQ56 today and am experiencing the same issue. Other wireless devices are working fine, but the compaq won't connect to the internet unless it's pretty much in the same room as the router...

Think I will be taking it back first thing tomorrow!

Re: Compaq CQ56 with Atheros AR9285 wifi problem

I had the same problem with low or no signal strength and frequent disconnects.  After many hours on the phone with India a woman finally had me unscrew the back and check the wireless card and lo and behold IT WAS DISCONNECTED.  Connected them and now have full signal strength.

Re: Compaq CQ56 with Atheros AR9285 wifi problem

Thank you so much! That was the problem with mine also only one of the cables (white) was connected to the wireless card and all I had to do was connect the other cable and done!

Thanks again

Re: Compaq CQ56 with Atheros AR9285 wifi problem

I'd been having much the same problems off and on for almost a year now on my CQ56 laptop, so I took the advice here and cracked open the cover to the wifi card and the black (or number 1) wasn't fully seated into the connector. After popping it down all the way and making sure the white (or number 2) was fully seated I fired the laptop back up. I immedately noticed significantly faster speeds while browsing and have not had a drop off yet when I'd been having them every 10-15 mins earlier tonight. (Its been an hour or so now. I'll update if it starts to drop out again.)

Well I have to sadly report that within 5 minutes of posting this I had my first drop out, and while typing this had others. Apparently there is still something wrong with this card.

Re: Compaq CQ56 with Atheros AR9285 wifi problem

I have 3 Copmaq CQ60 pcs with a Atheros AR9285 network adapters. The wireless connection keeps dropping and I have to troubleshoot it every few minutes. Windows Network Diagnostics resets the adapter each time. Then a few minutes later it drops again. I have other wireless computers that work fine when connected to the router. Already talked to Compaq tech support and updated the drivers for the network coard and the router bios. after several frustrating conversations with tech support, i was directe to contact the manufacturer about this who tranfered my phone call to their sales voicemail and not responded to my email requests to fix th issue.  Obviously, this is an issue that is widely know to occur in several makes and models that have this network card installed.

I would like these network cards replaced with a model that does not have connectivity issues but HP support wants to charge me over $60 per machine for a new card.

I am VERY disspointed with HP customer support and do not expect to purchase another Compaq/HP computer.  below is a link to google search leading to others with the same issue.
