Ethernet works, but wifi connection doesn't appear?

Hi Paul,

I also have the same problem. It shows  wireless lan disabled by device manager, the only device shown is broadband (PPPoE) and Dial up if I select "show connection options that this computer is not set up to use"

I tried already to run the system restore utility and the windows update but it didn't work.

My laptop is the HP Pavilion g6-1189sa, but I dont know how to check the model wireless adapter.

Could you help me?

Hi, Jan:

To find out what model wireless lan adapter you have, you go to the device manager (control panel>system & security>device manager).

Click on the network adapters section to expand it and you should see two network adapters listed--a wired one and a wireless one.

If you don't know which is which, post both models and I will send you the link to the latest drivers for your wireless one.

Ralink RT5390 802.11b/ g/n WiFi Adapter

You can download and install the latest driver for your wireless card and see if that fixes the problem.

Hi Paul, maybe you can help me, too??  I have a dv6436nr laptop that has had wireless working since 2008-ish.  About a month ago the laptop fell asleep and when I woke it up the wireless no longer worked. 

I've updated all drivers, including installing a Broadcom driver, however, in the Device Manager there is no reference at all to Wifi on the Network Adapters list:

I appreciate any help you (or anyone) can offer me!

Hi, Kim:

If I were a betting person, I would say that either the wireless card burned out, or the slot it is plugged into burned out.

This is a common issue with the dv6000/dv9000 series. The notebooks tend to run hot (perhaps you have noticed this), and then two things go out...video and wireless.

You can try removing and reseating the card. You can try purchasing a used but tested and working card on eBay (just do your search by the part number on the card), and take the gamble the card burned out.

You can probably get a used replacement card for $10 or so.

If a replacement card doesn't work, then you know the motherboard went bad, and you can either buy a new notebook, or an external USB wireless adapter for your current one.
