Accepted Solution

HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

Still haven't hear from anyone and I'm still having problems with my new printer after three full days of trying everything.  I'm about to take it back to the store.

I have managed to really screw things up with my wireless network and router.

The most puzzling error message I have received after trying to set up Digital Fax to Network Folder is:

"Error.  Your printer cannot write to the destination folder.  Destination folder is set to read-only or has wrong permissions.     Digital Fax is turned off."

I know for a fact that it is not read only and I have given every permission possible for this file.  Can anyone help me?  I don't want to learn how to fix it, I'm up to my ears in frustration, but I want someone to TELL me how to fix it!  Do I have to call the GEEK Squad?

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

Hi ThatGirlAgain,

Ok, I will try a couple of things and then disappear magically with dragon wings.

I am sorry it is turning into rocket science and no one seems able to help.

I am not an expert on Fax Setup, but I showed up and I will try.

Maybe one of our Printer experts will pop in later.  We can hope.

Meanwhile... Take a look below.

I know this printer will do a Fax.  It is a matter of convincing it, is all.

If you want to give it another try...

  • The Network Folder must have been created from within Windows (on your computer).
  • One cannot create a folder destination from the front panel on the printer.
  • The folder must be within a folder hierarchy that you own and control.  That is, this is going to be easier if you create the Network Folder destination (one of ten possible folders) in your own account somewhere, or at least on a disk in a folder that you own / control.  Do not put the destination folder in a system controlled hierarchy - like C:\Programs, for example.
  • You need to have the Full Feature Software installed on your computer.

===========================================================================

(Re)install the basic driver or Full Feature Software:

Drivers control hardware connected to the computer (wired or wireless).

Software controls the programs that interact with the User.

  • Go to the top of the forum page to Support and Drivers
  • Enter your Printer Model information, and then go to Software and Drivers...
  • Enter your Operating System in the Drop-down menu...  Scroll down
  • Look for category Driver - Product Installation Software
  • Select the appropriate Basic Driver or Full Feature Software – if available for your printer Save the *.exe installation package on your computer -
  • NOTE the name and the location of the file when you save it.  The *.exe file will likely save to the "Downloads“ folder.
  • Install the Software / Driver installation package.  If you have ‘Admin’ control, you may highlight the package and “double-click” to install it, else Right-Click, Select ‘run as Administrator’ and install.

NOTE:  There is sometimes a lot of information at the printer’s website manuals, how-to pages, and alerts for your printer.  Be sure to take an extended look at what’s available.

===========================================================================

You said you do not want to learn how to do this, but frankly, you may have to do so.

Here is the next step from the User Guide, Chapter 4, Page 54:

Windows
1. Open the HP Printer Software. For more information, see Toolbox (Windows).
2. Double-click Scanner Actions, and then double-click Scan to Network Folder Wizard.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions.

NOTE: After you create destination folders, you can use the printer’s EWS (Embedded Web Server) to
customize the scan settings for these folders.

On the last screen of the Scan to Network Folder Wizard, make sure the Launch embedded web server when finished check box is selected. When you click Finish, the EWS is displayed in your computer’s default web browser. For more information about the embedded web server, see Embedded web server.

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

I very much wanted this to work.  However, I have spent four hours this morning following your instructions and those in the user guide and I still have had no success.  I get to the point where I have to name the network path for the scan to folder (and herein lies my problem) but no matter what I name the folder or the path I keep getting the same "no write" or "invalid network path name" error messages.  I believe I am not understanding the part of naming the network path.  This is what I have been doing:

\\(name of my computer)\(myname)\mydocs\scan folder  - or -

\\HOMEBASE\Darlene\My Documents\Scan folder

I'm sure it is just my lack of knowledge in setting network paths.  Can you still help me or direct me to someone who can?  Thank you so much for your efforts.

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

Hi ThatGirlAgain,

Is your printer on the same network as your computer?

For example:

Computer-1  IP address:  192.168.1.2

Printer-1 IP address 192.168.1.10

I would think you would have other problems with your network if this part were wrong, but it does depend on the extent of the network and how forgiving the router setup...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you have full control over the My Documents folder?  That is, do you own and control your account?  Weird things can happen if you do not actually control your own account.  This can happen if you copied your data from another account, moved your account (without using the proper tools), or did something else that confused the system.

For example, the example below might be what you would expect to see if you looked at the properties of your user account properties under the security tab.  See all the "check marks" indicating "full control".  Your account should look like this.

Open a Window > Click to the "C" disk > Users > Right-Click on Darlene (or your account) >

Properties > Security > Highlight your User Name > Examine the Check marks....

Users_account_security_settings.PNG

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You might try resetting the Printer.   If you have reset any of the wireless / router settings, then it may not be responding to the changes.

Reset the printer

 Here are two kinds:

1)  If there is a keypad, turn it off, then on and press # and 6 (keep pressed while turning on printer).

2)  No keypad?  Unplug while on, leave unplugged 30 seconds to a minute.  Plug back in.  (Be careful with this one - don't risk shock.)

==========================================================================

I admit I do not know why one would have to name the scan folder or even mount the path for that matter.  The software is supposed to take care of the incidentals and it is not doing it.  This keeps coming back to a breakdown in the network or in the way the account is set up. :smileyfrustrated:

I will put in a request for help. It may take a while - time zones vary widely and it depends on who is online...  Please do check the ownership on your account and try the reset.

Hang in there!

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

Dragon-Fur:

I understand what you mean by checking my user account and yes, I am the owner but I am using Windows XP on a ten year old computer so I didn't recognize the features in the image you included. When I open the properties my only options are if I want to share the folder and if want to share with others on the network.  Over the ten years of owning this computer, I have moved and renamed files and even had Windows XP reinstalled twice because of viruses.  So it's highly likely that my files are pretty confusing, even to me!  So, I have another question:  Do I need to "fix" all my files and folders?  I mean, would I have to go through every single one and check the properties?

I have reset my router and reset the printer.  I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the software four or five times.  I downloaded the driver from HP as you suggested but no matter what, when I test the path to the network  folder where I want the scans and faxes to go, according to the setup Wizard,  get the same error messages.

It looks like I'm up against the wall on this one so I'm open to any suggestions.  I really don't want to return the printer.  Should I contact the company where I got the router?  Is it possible the router is the problem?

Thanks again.

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

Hi, It is true you might have a disadvantage with the older XP system. Driver support is spotty and in some cases things do not work as expected... If you do need to "fix" something, (and I do not know yet that you do), you would not need to fix or check down to file level. I have an old XP system I think I can fire up and check tomorrow. I cannot think of any reason that the router itself is at fault - the settings may not be correct, settings can always be messed up, but the router should be fine.

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

ThatGirl,

OK, Fired up my XP box.  It is certainly different - my apologies for confusing you - it's been a while since I have had that notebook running; it is a much different environment when you first look at it!

Here is our recommendation:

Open the My Documents (or whatever folder) up for Sharing.   Allow the default name of the folder to be the name of the "shared" folder.

OR

If this is your home system, you could make this easier by just sharing the top level account, for example, the "Darlene" folder.  That would take care of the sub-folders.

Let me know what happens!

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

Thank you so much for helping me.  This is the first time I have received information from and HP forum that actually worked.  I commend you for your patience and courtesy. I took your advice and allowed sharing from the top level of my folders.  Now I am able to fax and receive faxes to my network folder without printing them as they come in.  Thanks again!

Re: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

ThatGirlAgain,

You are most welcome!  I am glad it is finally working. Hurray!  Fax-On

Beyond XP

When you can, you might consider upgrading to Windows 7XP support is going away completely in the next couple of years and it will be harder than ever to get drivers (software) and support of any kind for XP. The forums will still be around - folks will still be sort of "hanging on" with old XP boxes here and there.  The official support will be gone, though, and along with it any kind of hope that things will ever be "the same".

It is time to think about how to move on to the next step.  There are lots of options and there is help available to help good decisions.  HP makes lots of easy-to-set up-and ready-to-use computers. You might need new hardware to run Windows 7.  Frankly, the OS (operating system) is greedy compared to XP and you'll just need a "beefier" system.  Fortunately, you can get a very nice computer for a pretty reasonable price with some thought and preparation.

Something New!  By the time you are ready, Windows 8 may be ready for you.  Wait until you see Windows 8!  Easy to look at, with a "gliding eye" format that allows the user to place on the screen just what she likes, Windows 8 is a new way to view Windows.  For those of us who cannot live without our Desktop, it is still accessible "behind the scenes".  Windows 8 will be past its "too new to use" phase in the next couple of years.
