My laptop is a G72 here is what I did:

 

Click on Start, type mouse in the search box, click on change mouse settings, then click on device settings, then put a checkmark in the box next to disable internal pointing device when external usb pointing device is attached. Can't remember now whether I clicked on OK or Apply.

 

(When I remove the usb thingy the touchpad is functional again and it switches instantly to the mouse when I insert the usb thingy and if I leave the usb thingy plugged in permanently it just automatically is working with each logon session.)
