Led won`t turn on

[ Edited ]

I have a HDX18-1378ca and I took it apart and put back together again and no the led for the wireless won`t come on so I can`t connect with the wireless. The hard wire works fine. I can tap the wireless icon but it won`t turn on. everything else works fine. The power bar that goes around the keyboard only has one ribbon cable and the power button works fine and this should supply power to the wireless icon also put you can tap the wireless icon and it won`t turn on. It should be blue when it is on and orange when off but it seems like there is no power to the led. When I go into network and shareing it says there is no connection available. but the router has a strong signal as my other laptop connects to it and my desktop works fine. Anyone have any ideas.

Re: Led won`t turn on

[ Edited ]

I have rebuilt a few of these so I may be able to help.

It sounds like all of the rest of the controls are working, eg. Bass/Treble/Volume/Eject etc. Need to confirm this...

 Try a hard reset :

Remove the battery and adapter and anything else plugged into the machine. Hold down the power button for 1 minute and boot up only with the adapter in place.

Is it the button blue now ?

If not, the cable may need to be reseated and/or the exposed connections on the cable need to be cleaned (use Isopropyl Alcohol) Don't touch the connections with your bare fingers ounce they are cleaned.

Make sure that the cable is fully home before locking it down.

If the cable was jerked or flexed to much it may be damaged internally.

The hot key bezel may also be faulty, HP had lots of problems with these and even if all the rest of the buttons are working, others may not.

What problems were you having that you took your machine apart apart ?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Had a look at your other threads and it looks like you replaced the screen, anyways, try those things above.

I also see that you're in Campbell River, I am just in Lake Cowichan.  :smileyhappy:

Re: Led won`t turn on

Thank you. I will try cleaning the ribbon cable on the motherboard side. The ribbon cable looks old. The only thing that works on the key board trim is the power on off button. the volume and the other ones light up but do not work and the wireless icon does not come on at all. there is one for sale on e-bay for $36.00. The part number is 496883-001 which I found in the manual. The part itself does not half a part number on it so I e-mailed them to make sure it is the right part. Yes we are just a few Hrs drive apart. I have completly rebuildt this laptop with another motherboard, new lcd screen new ribbon cables, new battery. I will let you know how I made out.

Re: Led won`t turn on

I bet you don't have the ribbon cable seated properly, I will post some picks after work. Check both ends and they both have to be shoved all the way in before the locking bar is pushed into place. The cable gos in quite far.

The hot key bezels are all the same for the HDX 18 and if you want a black one, the one for the dv8 will fit.

Don't get the one for the HDX16, but that may fit also. If you can, buy a new one. They are held together internally with this super sticky tape and after a while they stop working. I think the adhesive creeps a bit over time and things fall out of alignment.

The power has nothing to do with the bezel, it has it's own power source, ribbon cable ans LED light. It's totally on a separate circuit.

If you have a simple continuity tester you can check the cable ounce it's removed form the MoBo and the bezel. You can remove it from both ends.

Hi. I took it right down and took the ribbon cable of and washed it with alcohol and noticed that when I was pushing the cable in one corner tried to fold up so I straightened it out with tweezers and got it to go in but it still does not work and the volume and other led`s don`t come on now but the laptop works fine otherwise. The ribbon cables do not lock on in this model. You can turn the volume up and down with the speaker icon. I will order a new keyboard trim with the cable and it should work then and will let you know how it turns out. It will take awhile to get the part. Thank you.

Re: Led won`t turn on

All the hot key bezels are the same with a locking tab. I will post some videos when I get home from work on how to unlock the connector.

The one end on the MoBo does not lock.

Re: Led won`t turn on

HP Media Library for videos.

 http://h20574.www2.hp.com/default.htm?lang=en&cc=US&hpappid=psml

Click on FRU Remove/Replace. You will know what I mean when you get there.

Make sure you're signed in before clicking on the link.

When you get to the video page it will stay black for a while _ give it some time.

Click on Keyboard Cover in the left column, HP refers to that as the bezel.

There are two choices for teh HDX 18 in the library, the 1000 and 1100 series, they're both exactly the same, so choose either one.

Re: Led won`t turn on

Hi checked out the video and that is how I did it. This last time I took it apart the led lights on the volume an treble and other led`s do not light up. I think the ribbon cable has been apart to many times. I bought the laptop on e-bay and it did not work and like I said I completly rebuilt it but that keyboard trim is one of the old parts. I have had it apart quit a few times also. I have a new Keyboard cover assembly with the capacitive circuit and cable coming from Hollywood Fl. That should fix it. Will let you know how I make out.
