My HP shows it is connected to new router, but won't connect to internet. How do I fix it?

I have an HP G60 Notebook PC with Windows Vista Home Premium, it's about 4 years old. I recently got a new Cisco Linksys E1500 wireless router, which is connected to my home computer. My laptop shows that it is connected to the home network, but it will not connect to the internet. Other laptops in the house are able to connect to the network and the internet. Mine seems to be the only one not working. Why isn't it working? What do I need to do to fix it?

I've run network diagnostics. It says "A problem with you network router or broadband modem might be preventing an internet connection." I've unplugged both of these and tried again. It didn't work! I've also connected my laptop straight to the modem and it still didn't connect to the internet. I've tried resetting the network adapter. My IP settings are set to automatic.

My internet connection wasn't a problem before last week (when I got a new router). What's wrong with my computer? PLEASE HELP!

Hi:

If you have an Atheros wireless adapter in your PC and haven't updated the driver, I recommend you install this one.

Atheros wireless adapters with old drivers, do not like new Linksys routers.

If you have an Atheros wireless card, and if your wireless driver is more than 2 years old, then I am very confident this will solve your connection issue.

I've installed the new driver. Should it replace the old one automatically to access my network or do I need to change the settings myself?

You're very welcome.

Your description of the problem was perfect, and allowed me to be almost certain that was the problem.

Enjoy!

Re: My HP shows it is connected to new router, but won't connect to internet. How do I fix it?

I have a HP 2000-240CA Notebook PC and I running windows 7 on it. One day I was working at the library and suddenly the internet just stopped working but everyone else's computer was still working. I restarted my computer and all it said was no connections are available until I got home. I plugged a internet cord directly from the wireless router(cisco systems linksys) and that is the only time my computer could go on the internet.

Re: My HP shows it is connected to new router, but won't connect to internet. How do I fix it?

Hi:

I would check the device manager and ensure your wireless card is present under the network adapters section.

If it is, check the status of the device to see that it is working properly and not disabled.

If it is not present in the device manager, it is possible that your wireless card has failed, and you may have to purchase a replacement card.

They are pretty easy to replace, but you have to make sure you get the one with the same HP part number as the one yours has, or it will not work.

The part number is normally found on the card on a sticker that states "Replace with HP Spare" and has a XXXXXX-XXX part number.

Hi:

That's easy enough to do...download the file from another PC.

Copy it onto a USB flash drive.

Plug the flash drive into your PC that can't access the internet, and run the install file from the flash drive, or copy it from the flash drive to the C:\ drive, and run it from the C:\ drive.
