For the past several months the laptop has lost connectivity while still reporting being connected. Usually one or more reboots corrected the issue. When recently that did not work, I updated the drivers using another laptop connected to the same router. After updating the drivers, the wireless card would not connect to any network that was encrypted.
The specific model is Pavilion dv4-1428dx.

Try using the wired connection on your Notebook and make sure you update the wireless card drivers for your Notebook. Before you update make sure you uninstall the wireless card drivers completely. Also, do a BIOS update on your Notebook.
If this does not help, try to reset the wireless card on your Notebook. After this, try to connect to secured wireless network. Also, to isolate if this a router/notebook issue, try to connect to some other secured wireless network other than yours or try getting another notebook and connect it to your secured wireless network.
Still if the issue persists , check wireless settings on your router from your ISP if router was provided by them or with your router manufacturer if you purchased it on your own.
I am an HP employee!!

Hi
I will suggest you first logint your BIOS and make it default, setting to default the BIOS do the following...
1. Turnoff the notebook by using power button.
2. Restart the notebook by using power button and keep on tapping F10 as soon as we turn on
the note book until or unless we the BIOS screen.
3.Hit F9 to get the default configuration.
4.Now we will get the option "Yes/No." Please select "Yes" and hit on enter then press the
f10 key again, which will set the system default value.
Once you do that please install the wireless driver once again from the RECOVERY manager, to do that:::
and enter Recovery in the search field. Select Recovery Manager from the list when it becomes available. Allow the action to continue, if prompted. The HP Recovery Manager opens.dip.
