Public Wifi Issues, Intel PROset Wireless Fails Ping Test

[ Edited ]

Hey,  I recently bought a dm4x, and so far, everything has worked wonderfully.  Until I try to connect to my campus wifi.

Several people in my course have laptops, and all of them have had flawless connectivity and speedy connections, so I don't believe the network is the issue.  However, whem I try to connect, my pages don't load, and when they do, it takes 5-10 minutes per page.  Assuming it doesn't crash while loading, which it typically does.

I attempted to use the Intel PROset wireless diagnostic tool, and everything passed except the ping test which consistently failed.   I don't know if this provides any sort of indication, as clicking "help" or "troubleshoot" are unresponsive.   I also use Norton Internet Security 2012, so perhaps it's some sort of firewall issue?  The laptop is brand new, I can always see and supposedly connect to the networks.  Even my home wireless works great.  But after buying this laptop specifically for school purposes, I'm pretty frustrated I can't connect on campus.  Any tips or advice to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Public Wifi Issues, Intel PROset Wireless Fails Ping Test

Hey there.  I just wanted to post an update for anyone facing similar issues:

After a lot of hair-pulling and enchanging several expletives, I finally traced the issue back to Norton.

Smart Firewall in Norton 2012 Internet Security blocks connectons from public networks as a default safety precaution.  By disabling the firewall I was able to access the network without issue.

Norton=>Settings=>Network=>Smart Firewall=>Off

In the Advanced Settings, I would like to set up a general rule to allow me to access this particular network, without disabling the Firewall entirely, but I've no idea how to do so.  I'm not very tech savvy, and this section looks like heiroglyphs to me.  If anyone is familiar with this software, or dealing with firewalls, any information would be appreciated.  Thanks
