Wifi stopped working after I created system disk

This is in regards to my HP Pavilion 6353.

Two days back, I created system disk for my laptop and after that my wifi stopped working. While creating system disk I switched off the wifi button and accordingly light turned to orange. After I finished making the disk when I decided to use my laptop for working / browsing, I noticed my wifi would not work (it would stay orange irrespective of switch position). Although wired internet connectivity is working fine.

So far...

- I have performed hard reset on the system but no success.

- I tried updating my wireless driver but it says I already have the correct driver.

- In my device manager, under network adapters, Microsoft 6to4 Adapter comes with the exclamatory sign. I tried updating the driver software but no success. I.e.. it says I already have the correct software.

- I tried to check system restore but I only have two restore point which are created after wifi stopped working. So I have not done system restore.

-  I also tried opening HP wireless assistance to see if it has turned off by the software. But for some reason that does not open. I uninstalled and reinstalled but still HP wireless assistance would not open.

Any suggestions.

thanks

Re: Wifi stopped working after I created system disk

Hi,

I cannot see where you mentioned your Operating System so there is some guess work involved here...

Below find some information so you can help yourself back to wireless connetivity.  It may just be that things need to be reset from a differnt direction.  You may have to go in and recheck or reset your wireless setup, that is, the way you connect to your router.

Below is a Wireless Assistant that will work for both Windows 7 and for Vista.  If you don't already have a newer version of this Assistant on your computer, you can install this version and run it.  The Assistant will act as a "go between" and help with checking your setup.

HP Wireless Assistant sp49018 V3.50.12.1

Here is a helpful guide on using the Wireless Assistant:

Installing and Using HP Wireless Assistant

I hope this helps...

Good Luck!

Re: Wifi stopped working after I created system disk

Hi Dragon,

thanks for your help.

My operating system is Vista 64bit.

I ended up reinstalling the full system (i.e.. installed back to factory setting). While machine was installing the system I noticed the wireless glow lamp was blue so I was kind of feeling good that the problem may be resolved. However by the time it completed the installation the glow lamp turned back to orange.

I also installed the file posted in your message earlier but no success. When I try to open 'HP wireless assistant' it seems it tries to do something but just does not open the assitance window. I noticed that now I have wireless adaptor disappeared from my device manager>> network adaptor (earlier it was showing an exclamatory sign)

Though it is difficult to believe but I am thinking it may be hardware problem. I am saying difficult to believe because of timing of the problem. I mean it stopped working right after I created system disk. AND moreover I re-installed the system and still wifi would not work.

Any other suggestion in this regards would be helpful.

thanks

Amitabh.

Re: Wifi stopped working after I created system disk

OK.  Big changes.  Smiling.

You may just need to update your drivers from your computer's website.

Start at

Support and Drivers

  • Enter your exact computer model.
  • Go to the Software and Drivers Downloads,
  • Enter your Operating System.
  • Enter "Next" and then Scroll down...
  • Click on Category "Driver - Network"and download the Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver
  • (If prompted, be sure to Restart / Reboot the computer.)
  • A Wireless Assistant is there in that category, too.

Consider:

  • You might check the BIOS update, and the Operating System Enhancements...
  • and anything in the Multimedia category.
  • Check the Audio driver download, too - you might need one if it was not part of the Factory set.
  • Grab the Quick Launch and your Synaptics TouchPad driver from Keyboard, Mouse, and Input Devices...

Since you are back at Factory Setup, you have a good basic setup.  This is both good and challenging at the same time.  You are probably OK.  Go slow, check the settings.  Install only the newest drivers and softwares that you find in each of the Download categories that you think you need.  (There might be "older" versions of some packages in some categories along with the newer versions - check before downloading.)

Check your router, too.  Make sure it is happy - you might restart it (not reset it) after you get things loaded and checked on the notebook side.

Below is some more help for Wireless.  Chances are it is all OK... Again, go slow and double check - THEN you can see if it is hardware - lots to do before making that jump.

Notebooks - Troubleshoot Internet Connection on a Wireless Network with Vista

Understanding Bluetooth Wireless Technology

This document may help - it is help for "after a Recovery".  You can use it as a "check list".

Things To Do After Performing a System Recovery (Windows 7, or Vista)

I hope this helps...

Good Luck!

Re: Wifi stopped working after I created system disk

thanks again Dragon,

As adviced, I updated the driver as well as updated  but nothing happened. So I took it easy.

A day later while computor was connected to intenet (via ethernet) and sitting ideal, I saw a message popping up said... Broadcom installed.... And wireless started working. I was kind of happy.

Later I installed office (office 2007). After office instation completed, I noticed wifi went off again (also wifi lamp went orange). Sad again

Started doing some trouble shooting... opened HP wireless assistance (it opened now). It shows wifi disabled and would not let met change it to enable. There was a message saying it may be disabled via device manager or BIOS. I could not see any option at either of the places to change it. I think my BIOS software is upto date.

Any ideas.

thanks
