Win 7 SP1 Laptop HP Pavilion will not join homegroup, wireless internet connection works great.

I have done all troubleshooters several times and incorporated recommended settings/changes --- NO JOY.

I have deleted server homegroup and reestablished new homegroup, designated as Homegroup --- NO JOY

I have done ping response testing with firewall disabled and enabled with NO dropped packets 100% efficient.

I have used Windows firewall and Norton firewall configured for wireless network  -- NO JOY

I have tried 2mhz and 5mhz broadcast range with --- NO JOY

Lap top will recognize homegroup, trying to join results in message --- ( this computer can not join homegroup )

Both computers are synced to internet time within 1 second.

I am open to any and all suggestions  ----------

Re: Win 7 SP1 can not join homegroup

Hi,

From the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and open Folder Options.  Click the View tab, fill in the radio button titled 'Show hidden files folders and Drives' and take the tick out of the box next to 'Hide extensions of known file types'.  Click apply to make these changes.

Next, browse to Local Disk C\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming and open the PeerNetworking folder.  Inside you should see a file titled idstore.sst.  Delete this file.  Close this window and then go back to Folder Options and re-hide Hidden files folders and Drives and extensions of known file types.

Restart the notebook and let Windows fully load.

Now open windows Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Services and check whether the following services appear as shown below - if they aren't, set them to this.

Peer Networking Grouping      This should show start up type as manual and the service should show as started.

HomeGroup Provider                This should show start up type as manual and the service should show as started.

Peer Name Resolution Protocol        This should show start up type as manual and the service should show as started.

Peer Networking Identity Manager     This should show start up type as manual and the service should show as started.

If they are all able to be started, or are already started, see if your notebook can now join the Homegroup.

Regards,

Re: Win 7 SP1 can not join homegroup

Dave:

Thank you so much for your reply and input, after implementing all of your posted sugestions to first the laptop then to both computers with the firewall and antivirus programs enabled and disabled --- NO JOY

With the changes implemented as you posted, should I now delete all homegroup names and start over ?

Re: Win 7 SP1 can not join homegroup

Hi,

I'd completely agree with your suggestion and that's what I would try next.  Also, on each machine, make sure that the Services I mention in my initial post are all able to start.

Let me know.

Best regards,

Re: Win 7 SP1 can not join homegroup

Dave:

All admin tools listed in your previous post are listed on my laptop exactly as you posted and I suspect because internet reception is good and because the server PC is listed in the network area of the laptop and because the laptop recognizes a homegroup, that those parameters are working.
Because of other information input I was led to investigate TCPIP6 settings in the registry of both computers and according to those authorities the registry settings are not correct for the implementation of TCPIP6 protocol.
According to other authorities I must create a registry key for ( DisabledComponents )
then assign a DWord value of ( 0 ).
Is it possible for you to walk me through that procedure or perhaps post that key entery as it should appear when properly entered into the proper areas as ME and the registry are NOT close buds.
If it would help I can post a screen capture to show the areas of concern.

Thanks for you help.

Re: Win 7 SP1 can not join homegroup

Hi,

IPv6 will need to be enabled for Homegroup to work, but before starting to edit the registry, could you post back with the following.

Concerning the following process, could you post back with Two results - One from any PC you have that is joined to the Homegroup and One from the notebook that will not join.

From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

ipconfig /all                        ( Note that there is a space between ipconfig and the / ).

Copy and paste the results into Notepad and then copy and paste these details with your next post - do this for the notebook and for the PC that is connected to your Homegroup.

Re: Win 7 SP1 can not join homegroup

Hi,

It may be an idea to set up a Static IP address for both the notebook and PC to see if this will allow Homegroup to function.

Open windows Control Panel and open Network and Sharing Centre.  Click Change adapter settings and in the following window, right click your wireless connection and select Properties.  Left click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to highlight it ( click on the wording and not the box with the tick ) then click the Properties button.  Click the radio button next to 'Use the following IP Address and then enter the following values.

For the notebook:

IP Address                                192.168.1.116

Subnet Mask                             255.255.255.0

Default Gateway                        192.168.1.1

Also, assign the following DNS Server Addresses

Preferred DNS Server               208.67.222.222             ( These belong to OpenDNS )

Alternate DNS Server                208.67.220.220

After entering these values, remember to click OK to each open Window, before restarting the notebook.

For the PC:

IP Address                                192.168.1.117

Subnet Mask                             255.255.255.0

Default Gateway                        192.168.1.1

Also, assign the following DNS Server Addresses

Preferred DNS Server               208.67.222.222             ( These belong to OpenDNS )

Alternate DNS Server                208.67.220.220

After entering these values, remember to click OK to each open Window, before restarting the PC.

Can you now get Homegroup to work?

Regards,

DP-K

Re: Win 7 SP1 can not join homegroup

Dave:

Latest info has been received and recorded for implementation in a day or two.

All Win7 help posts imply that TCPiP6 is an integral function of Homegroup when implemented between two Win7 units.

Why do  you suggest using TCPiP4 as a Homegroup protocol ?

Win7 help posts led me into the registry of both units with a command that led me to the TCPiP6 parameters.

It was suspected that the TCPiP6 protocol was not enabled in the registry even though the GUI command designated it as being enabled.

I was to locate this KEY --- DisabledComponents --- and assign a word value of (0) to said KEY.

The KEY DisabledComponents does not exist on either unit and I was instructed to edit the registry accordingly.

So far I  have not changed any registry data on the main PC but I did enter said Key and word value to the Laptop but I suspect I did not enter that info correctly.

If need be I can post a copy of that registry entry as it exists on the Laptop.

Do I now delete that KEY entry from the Laptop and proceed as you have instructed or venture deeper into the registry of both units ?

Re: Win 7 SP1 can not join homegroup

[ Edited ]

Hi,

Implementing a static IPv4 was not really intended as a solution - I simply wanted to prevent the router handing this out dynamically for now.

Concerning the 'DisabledComponents' registry key, the Microsoft 'Fixit' 50440 should automatically create this entry with the value data entry set to 0 - about half way down the page on the link below.  I would delete the key you created first and restart before applying this.
