Re: Wireless card disappeared from device manager

Wonderful. I just spent all day troubleshooting and reinstalling a clean Vista OS. F700 Notebook wireless adapter disappeared, out of warranty for a year. Restore points from a year ago did not help. Solid orange light and nothing and I do mean nothing I've done has helped. USB adapter ... nope. This particular machine without WIFI will screw me seriously. Not nice to be unable to point a finger at the cause and to have no one concerned enough at HP to check it out and let us know. I did not realize that sooooo many others were having this issue. I have 3 very expensive office printers, an all in one inkjet, 5 desktops, and 3 laptops from HP not to mention friends and family. Maintenance or repair is one thing... replacing is something else.  I may have to rethink where the next ones are going to come from.

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2416447)

TO my best knowledge, this is the offending update.  I have gone back and forth restoring and deleting and reinstalling and it is when this particular update installs and I reboot that I lose the card.

Re: Wireless card disappeared from device manager

I had high hopes for this -- but I have Framework 3.5.  The latest update for it was well after y problems started, so not my issue.  Glad it worked for you though.

Re: Wireless card disappeared from device manager

I have been having problems with a disappearing built-in  wifi adaptor (Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN in my HP dv2000 series laptop. I can sometimes go to the Device Manager and disable the adaptor, then enable it and it may re-appear but this doesn't always work as the adaptor doesn't appear in the list  etc. I have rebooted and rebooted and sometimes this works but it can take several efforts to get back on wifi. My laptop was given a new mother board some years ago under the extended HP warranty. Using an external wifi adaptor doesn't work consistently either.

Re: Wireless card disappeared from device manager

Hello if the wireless adapter is Not showing Up the Device manager there is only 3 possibilties 1 the driver has gone bad  2 is wireless card is not working(or connection problems) 3 mother board problem.

in order to get the 1st problem fixed u can try to uninstall and reinstall the driver from the Hp recovery manager

if that does not help then MOst probable the prob is with the hardware of the computer so you can try to reseat the wireless card which means u can try to remove and reconnect the wireless card however this process is bit ricky since u might end up damaging the computer Hardware .

if that does not help then it will be eiher the prob with the Wireless card or the Mother board which ideally requires a Hardware service .

however you can try with a new Wireless card if that does not help then it is deffenitely the mother bard Prob

Hope this Helps

Re: Wireless card disappeared from device manager

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions! I un-installed Microsoft.net Framework on my laptop and since then my wifi adaptor works. I will monitor it but I have booted my laptop over 6 times with no problems since uninstalling this software. Thanks!

Re: Wireless card disappeared from device manager

Do you have automatic updates turned on?

I deleted the Framework then set my computer to start in clean boot only; reinstalled the framework from the update site, reset my computer to boot normally and I haven't had any more problems.  Only on day 3 now with no issues so hopeful, but not confident.

My 2 cents.

Yes, I had automatic updates turned on. I reset it to download only and ask before updating.

I am still having some problems but there is an imporvement without the Microsoft. net.

Re: Wireless card disappeared from device manager

I was fighting the disappearing adapter problem, now I think I know the answer.

There is a class action suit against NVIDIA which involves my computer and many other HP products.

Symptoms of the defect include not recognizing the wireless adaptor.  Check your computer model to see if yours is included in the class action suit.  If so, you may be able to be compensated if the settlement is accepted on 20 December.

I bought a new HP before I found out about the suit.  Not sure yet what the compensation will cover.
