Wireless connected but cannot display webpage

Hi, I have a HPG7094 laptop with Vista 64bit installed.

I have been trying for days to sort my problem out. My wireless connection has stopped working. It says it is connected to my wireless - excellent - but when I try to open the internet I get the error IE cannot open the webpage. I have deleted my network and tried re-connecting only to get the same error. I have done a clean install on my laptop and downloaded the drivers from the HP website but it is still the same.

In the bottom RH corner it says 'Unidentified Network' (and my network name) Access: Local only. If I connect the ethernet cable, it works fine and if I connect my orange mobile dongle it works fine.

I have other laptops and desktops and all these connect wireless without a problem. I have tried 'repairing' the wireless connection and renewing the IP, still no joy. I have logged into the router from my desktop and changed the channel from 'auto' to '11' and '6' but this doesn't have any effect.

Has anyone any ideas what could be causing this problem, any help would be very much appreciated.

Gail

Re: Wireless connected but cannot display webpage

When you have connected to a network but can't browse on the internet, it's most likely a DNS problem. It means, you can update the operating system and have a working instant messenger but can't see any webpage. Make sure that DNS settings in the IPv4 connection properties are on "automatical". It may also be a Vista bug because I have seen similar problems before but didn't notice any solution..

Re: Wireless connected but cannot display webpage

Hi

I have just noticed that there is another ongoing problem of the same nature and I am just in the process of following the instructions from DavidPK, so far with no luck but have just got to the 'set static ip' instructions. I will post back when I have completed the instructions!

Re: Wireless connected but cannot display webpage

Ive just followed through all instructions suggested by DavidPk to JoMrsIcanfixit except the last instruction to check for a virus as I have just done a clean install of Vista. I tried setting a static IP but I still cannot connect. I am out of ideas now!

I have noticed that you have also a mobile broadband dongle. My mate had installed a usb dongle as well and this somehow disabled his internal wireless card and the mini PCI slot doesn't work any more. He has to use a usb wireless card instead. Windows Vista is the operating system. I think that Vista doesn't like the internal adapter when a mobile broadband modem is also installed.

You can use an ethernet cable to connect to the router, set a static IP for your laptop (reserve the same address as you get when connected by the cable) and then manually configure the IPv4 connection settings on Windows. The default getaway and DNS server should be the IP address of the router.

edit: When reserving the static IP address for your laptop, you need to set up the MAC address of the wireless card. You can find it in the Device Manager in the properties of the wireless card..

Re: Wireless connected but cannot display webpage

Hi

I noticed elsewhere in the messages that someone said HP/Vista/sky sagem modem are just not happy together so I decided to ring sky this afternoon to see if I could have my sagem replaced for a netgear modem which I used to have when all worked well.

The 'sky' man (Andy) talked me through changing the modem settings from WPA2 Personal to WEP, then changing settings on my other computers. This got the HP Laptop working!!

My Windows 7 desktop, 2 x vista laptops and daughters HP Windows 7 worked ok but my hubbies XP desktop kept dropping connection and when I went into the settings it had reverted back to the WPA2 password. It did this half a dozen times or more in 15 minutes! So I got back on the phone to sky (which was a different person, as usual) but we couldn't get the XP connected so I changed the sagem back to as it was and I am back where I started with only one HP laptop with vista not connecting!

If anyone has a problem with not connecting on a HP Vista laptop, then knowing this may help them!

I had the problem before I installed my mobile dongle, but I will uninstall it and try it. I am going to try your other suggestion too with the static address and will post back!

I have looked for the MAC address but can't find it. I looked on all the tabs in the Atheros adapter properties. And, Im not sure how to set up the MAC address when I find it ?

Re: Wireless connected but cannot display webpage

I have just connected the ethernet cable and made a note of the IP which is 192.168.0.7 and entered this into the network connection properties (TCP/IPv4).

I just opened cmd and typed ipconfig /all to see if I could find my MAC address which I think I did but under 'Wireless Lan adapter wireless connections' in there I noticed that at the side of 'Autoconfiguration IPv4 address' it said '169.254.225.244 (preferred) This doesn't look right to me after checking the same thing on my desktop???

Re: Wireless connected but cannot display webpage

Hi

After another few hours last night looking through this forum I came across a message posted by Paul Tikkanen on 21 January with a link to a different driver for the Atheros wireless. I downloaded and my wireless is now working!

Thank you everyone for your help and keep up the good work!
