As I said I would, I did raise hell about it.  HP covered my cost for an external trendnet usb 450 mbps adapter.  And I've asked the office of the CEO to review the marketing policy that only the Envy line be allowed to get a 300 mbps adapter (though though 450's are available) while the others are stuck with speeds of about G level.

I just gave up on deaing with hp and modded the bios on my laptop, i know it might be the wrong way to go about this problem, but i did not longer wanted to deal with hp support.

So how does the 6230 work now?

HP had actually sent me one which of course didn't work even though it was 'HP branded' and listed in the service manual.  When my daughter comes home from college, I plan to put it in her Vaio, which also came with a 1000.  But I haven't heard of any whitelist on the Vaio's.

This may be helpful for those who need a dualband wireless N adapter for their DV6 / DV7 laptops.

This adapter is somehow listed in BIOS whitelist of several versions of BIOS.

So no need of using modded BIOS.

I'm going to check it out.

HP once sent me such a 6230 to try in a DV7 I got from them and the card was rejected since my laptop's bios was not written to accept the card I was sent.

The manual lists a 6230 part number, but the part number actual relates back to a Ralink card. Sigh.

Exactly.  That was noted about a year ago.  What HP and other manufacturers have against 5ghz N and newer / better wifi cards is beyond me.
