Hi
I need to connect my HP Officejet 6500 wireless to a desktop through a USB cable & still maintain the wireless connection to my laptop.
I have a HP Pavillion dv7 Notebook with 4gb memory running windows 7. To which the printer is already installled & running good wirelessly without a router.
I need to somehow add a Dell desktop running windows xp that does not have wireless capabilities.
The manual that came with the printer gives instruction for wireless setup or wired setup but does not seem to mention the possibility of both.
thanx in advance

hey there MackinacGrille
with my problem i cant do anything on my wireless side yet but i think i may have figured out the USB to PRINTER still
on my side it may be a tad different than yours but ill explain . .
I'm thinking of running my main ethernet cable into a splitter box then having 1 smaller ethernet going from the splitter box to my main PC(not wireless). Also having another smaller ethernet going from the splitter box to the HP PRINTER.
the USB is still connected from the PC TO HP during this..
HOPEFULLY when this is done and i WILL BE ABLE TO SURF THE NET ON MY PC fingers crossed x . . and if i transmit a print from my laptop it will go via the ethernet and PRINT . . fingers x !
we will have to see. I'll let you know how i get on

well i can something on the wireless side now as my laptop is fixed totally but this may not be a solution for you but it solved my proble with the hp printer,
I have a main PC which i installed the standard hp software into for the printer to print of..TO THE HP.. when it came to the
technical side i was right i brought my longest ethernet lead from my wireless router to a splitter box, I then had 2 smaller seperate ethernet cables. 1 for my PC and 1 for the HP printer.
I started to install the wireless on my windows vista home premium software when it asked for the usb from the priter to be plugged in, i unplugged it from the PC and into the laptop, i let it do it's thing diagnostic's, I.P address ETC and waited till it said remove usb then it said print a test page which was cool cause it was WIRELESS ! YAY ! . . .
THEN i put the usb back into my pc and my pc still printed on the hp yay !
this might not solve your problem but it may help somehow
all the best
Philarch.

I need to connect my HP Officejet 6500 wireless to a desktop through a USB cable & still maintain the wireless connection to my laptop.
can't you just do the wireless software installation into your laptop or if you have done that already do it again and
use your laptop and just quickly use your laptop as the IP REFERENCE ! and then put the usb back to the desktop or will the laptop stop working if you disconnect the usb for this ?
i'm starting to think at this point you should email me a picture of your setup lol i.e routers, cables wireless etc lol
