hp pavilion dv7 notebook pc atheros wifi upgrade

i have a hp pav dv7-3065dx laptop that came with a Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter that only receives on 2.4 ghz....i have a router that can transmits on both 2.4 and 5 ghz..Is it possible to upgrade that wireless chip to a atheros dual-band chip in the hp laptop

I am wanting to do the same with my dv7-4190us with a broadcom 4313.  Have you found a solution to the upgrade as of yet?  I came across a couple people who have upgraded their Dells and one who did a wifi card swap on a dv6830ed, but he had to cook the bios to get the adapter whitelisted and that is a bit out of my league unless I want to start doing a lot of reading...

Cyclops:  Thank you for the response... the only problem is that I am unable to find the BCM4322 listed for sale anywhere besides used on eBay.  After some research, it seems like the two best bets would be the Intel 5300 or the Atheros 9280... do you have any knowledge of either of these devices? 

Getting around the "whitest" and/or adding a 3rd antenna won't be a problem if either is required.

That Intel 5300 is a very good card. I have done an upgrade to Intel 6200-N Advanced but I was thinking about 5300 and 6300. They have 3 antenna connectors but the third one is optional and doesn't have to be connected. The antennas are underneath the monitor display and I'm not crazy to dismantle it.

If you decide to use any unsupported wireless card, use this manual to get it work:

Prerequisites:
- An hexadecimal editor like HxD: http://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/
- Andy's tool Latest Version: http://mods.myftp.org/Tools/Phoenix_SLICTool/phoenixtool164.zip

1- Extract spYourBios.exe, then extract XXXXXX.exe
2- Open XXXXXX.bin(same name like XXXXXX.exe) with Andy's tool
3- Once decompress, select "other" in manufacturer
4- At advanced choose: 'no SLIC' and 'Allow user to modify other modules' press done
5- Press GO and wait until the tool pauses and show popup(don't press OK yet).
6- In DUMP folder, edit the module E62F9F2F-4895-4AB5-8F1A-399D0D9C6B90_2_776.ROM, search the hexadecimal string  75 6A B9 02 and replace 75 by EB,save the modification.
7- Press OK on Andy's tool popup
The Andy's tool will notice about changes that were made and will reintegrate the module.

8- replace original_name.bin by the newly created original_name_SLIC.bin (rename it original_name.bin)
9- Flash using InsydeFlash.exe

If i may ask... why did you go with the 6200 over the 5300 or 6300?  It seems like the only quantifiable differences I am seeing between most internal cards are the price (and that isn't by much) and max transfer speeds...

Hi, without the third antenna in a laptop are 5300 and 6300 less useful. It means you can still use them but with a less performance. I have seen some opinions from network specialists and they say that 6200 is the best card for 2 antennas laptops. My router is able to transmit up to 300Mbps so any card up to 450Mbps speed is not necessary for me..

Pepe999 - I'm assuming from looking at the tools required for the whitelist fix... that method is for a Phoenix Bios? 

My laptop is running a 4.8 mb Insyde F.23 Bios which from everything I've been reading is an accessible file due to HP's compression of it.  Have you had any experience/success getting into a similar Bios?

Hi, forget the name of the tool. The tool is for Phoenix, Insyde, Dell and also EFI bioses. I have used it with F.1.D  Insyde BIOS on my laptop and it works.

I have the same problem with my Pavilion's Atheros ar9285 dual wifi.  I cannot connect in 5ghz mode.   Why should the owner have to upgrade the machine if the orginal chipset does not work as advertised?
