laptop can see wirless but can not connect????? plz help

ok, so i bought a used compaq presario c700 a few days ago, so it has no warranty, it works as great as something with windows on it can work, except one thing... it has a very frustrating wifi issue.. it wont connect to my wirless network, i have tried almost everything i think i can, so has my dad who is a very big computer "geek" lol he can do almost anything with windows, mac, and linux, and he cant even figure this out, so please dont tell me to do something stupid like restart the router, or restart the laptop, or disable security or something, i have tried all of that type of stuff, and some kind of winsock or something thing and driver updates, and firmware updates for the router, changing the router channe ect... i need something drastic, and i need someone who has had this same exact problem..

ok, so here is how it works, i turn on the wifi on the laptop, vista can see my wirless network, and about 10 of them arround my house, mine has a full signal, and works on all the other laptops in the house, we have many, and they run nt, xp, vista, mac 10.4, 10.5, and os9, and a few different versions of linux, none of them have problems, so i know  its not the router,  i cant imagin that it would be a hardware issue in my laptop since it gets a full signal and all, but idk, anyway.. it works fine when pluged in to the router but not wifi, the router is an airport extreme, its only like 1 year old, i have also tried an older netgear wifi router, and my laptop could see that wifi also, but had the same connection problem, when i try to connect i get this message     "wirless association failed because windows did not recieve any response from the wireless router or access point."    i really dont know what to do about this, i need this laptop for school, i cant afford a new one,  this is really driving me crazy grrrrrrrrrrrrr

sorry about the long a$$ post, im new to this whole forum or whatever thing so im not really sure how they work, if this is way to long or to much detail or something, im sorry, i didnt know.

I have just bought a brand new HP pavillion dv6 notebook pc intel i5 64 bit Win7 and have exactly the same problem.  It sees my network wifi but won't connect. It  does connect alright when hard wired. My Toshiba connects to the same wifi without problems. I havn't downloaded any Windows updates. The wifi light is on. It has the same settings as the toshiba including the correct password. I rang HP and was told it would be passed to a tech and I would be called back within 2 hours. that was 7 hours ago. I think I should just go and ask for my money back.

This effectively disables the Broadcast Flag and can help in some situations.

Save the executable (for example on a USB stick), copy it to your laptop and run.

Hi iamu,

It may be worth trying this approach but before doing so create a new restore point.

Go to device manager and open the Network Adapters tree.  Right click on your wireless card and select uninstall.  Do not tick any box asking to uninstall the associated driver.  Once the wireless adapter has been successfully uninstalled reboot your laptop and wait a few minutes for Windows to reinstall the hardware.  Try setting up a new wireless connection to your network.

i had same problem with my windows vista after i got a new wireless router , and fixed it........ hardwire your laptop to router first of all................ go to device manager click on network adapters then click wi fi adapter , then go to action then click on scan for new updates......and wait for it to download.....             good luck....

my laptop can see the wireless wifi but won't connect. I get a message saying that the signal is hidden. Please help me because the computer is needed every day and i can't afford to replace it.  I also have a problem with it overheating sometimes.

I am having pretty much the same problem. Actually, I can connect to this network and then all of a sudden out of the blue, it just stops and the diagnostic test says association failed. its a Pavilion dm4. 3 months old.

to solve your problem........... all you need is a wireless network adapter. i have a netgear that i paid like 30 bucks for. i have the exact same computer
