looking for security on public wireless networks

Hi I am operating a dv7 laptop and occassionally find myself using public (coffee shop networks) is there a way to secure my data transmissions from snooping eyes, VPN maybe ? All thoughts appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Re: looking for security on public wireless networks

Hi,

As you've mentioned in your post, a VPN is probably the best answer.  A good example of one is on the link below.  It requires no additional software as it is purely a network profile and is easily set-up.  To connect through the VPN, simply connect to the Public Network and then launch the VPN connection which then tunnels through the first connection, encrypting your connection between your PC and the VPN server.  This is an ideal solution to ensure your privacy and security when using Public Networks.  There are free versions ( though often with Ads etc ), but the one on the link below costs around $40 a year depending on the exchange rate.

I have personally used this for the last three years and have always found it to be an extremely reliable service.

One further point to mention is that if your connect through your VPN at home, make sure that you have a software firewall installed ( I expect you already have anyway ) as VPNs often pass straight through the Hardware Firewall in routers.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
