HP Probook 4520s with wifi problems !

[ Edited ]

Hello all !

I have a HP ProBook 4520s notebook, p/n xx761EA#ABB, s/n {Removed for privacy} and I'm running linux Mint 10 x32 and Windows 7 x32 Home. Wifi card is Ralink RT3090BC4 802.11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR Combo Adapter - part no. 602992-001. In windows my wireless card doesn't work, even after I installed the driver from HP site and from Ralink site. In linux is working, but is randomly disconnecting. In the Maintenance and Service Guide there are three wifi combo cards indicated for this model.

I want to know if I can change my wifi card with Broadcom 4313 802.11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi and 2070 Bluetooth 2.1+EDR Combo Adapter - part no. 600370-001. For Broadcom I know the drivers are working for both OS-es, windows and linux Mint 10.

Re: HP Probook 4520s with wifi problems !

You may change it. I mean if the part number for the BCM card is the same as the one from the maintenance and service guide, you can change it without worries...

When you want to buy a laptop, the most important device is the wireless card, because it's almost useless without internet. However, laptop sellers don't provide names and details of the wireless cards because they sell poor quality products (sometimes) and I wouldn't buy a laptop with a Broadcom, Atheros or Ralink wireless card even if the laptop would be a penta core over 3GHz with a 1TB SSD SATAIII..

Re: HP Probook 4520s with wifi problems !

Thank you !

I followed the maintenance and service guide and I installed the Broadcom wifi card code HP 600370-001. Is working like a charm ! I just had to activate in linux the propietary driver and in win7 it took the driver online. So, from last evening, no disconnections from the network !!! Ralink has to work very much to improove their products. Broadcom is much better. I had problems with wifi from the beggining, and two weeks ago wifi stoped responding. In HP service they had to replace the Mother Board. Now I replaced the wifi card and for the first time I'm very happy with this notebook ! I hope new MB will be OK. I heard rumours that HP is doing very bad quality products made in China, but I hope there are just rumours. I spent a lot on this notebook.

Thank you for support.

Hi,

I always buy a laptop with an Intel wireless card. The last one is HP and the original wifi was a Wifi-Link 5100AGN. This card is very reliable and I haven't got any troubles on Win or linux and it always worked out of the box. However, there are more advanced or even faster Intel wifi cards so I slightly modified the BIOS and now I can use any wireless card I want (Intel Ultimate-N 6300 at the moment). I have been waiting for a new 450Mbps router so I hope it will works well..:smileyhappy:

edit: I forgot, glad to help..:smileyhappy:

My Probook 4520s has the exact same Wifi Adapter (Ralink RT3090BC4 802.11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR Combo Adapter) and it's always laggy and linux support is frustrating.

I'd like to exchange this wifi adapter with an Intel card. Supported models are:

- Intel Centrino Advanced-N6200 802.11 a/b/g/n 2x2 (572509-001)
- Intel Wi-Fi Link 1000, 802.11b/g/n WLAN module  (572520-001)

1. Unlike the Ralink card, both lack bluetooth support. I don't need bluetooth, but I'm wondering whether this will cause any problems when replacing the old card. Any ideas?

2. The first one seems to be much better and is much more expensive. But it's 2x2. Will my 4520s support this since it came with a 1x1 card?

3. I will have to buy original HP spare parts with SPS number on them. Is there a risk in purchasing them from a Hong Kong reseller via Ebay? The N6200 is only 15 Euro and it's described as original SPS:572509-001 - do you think it will work well?

EDIT: Just wanted to report back, that my questions have all been resolved by simply purchasing a Intel N6200 card and testing it in the 4520s in question. See here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Wireless-Internet-Home/ProBook-4520s-Exchanging-the-Wireless-Network-Ca...
