Try power cycling the modem and the hub. ie. turn them off, unplug the power and the connections to the modem. wait 5 minutes. reconnect everything. turn on the modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to appeare normal. the power on the hub and wait a minute for it to come on. then reboot the computer and see what happens.
when you were on the trip, did you connect wireless or ethernet?

OK, tried what you suggested, did not work.
While I was in the Philippines I used wireless a couple of times (hotels) and mainly cell modem. I connected one time to a wired network and it connected to the hotels webpage but didn't like the additional fee they wanted so I disconnected.
When I connect using my ethernet cable I get "unidentified network" and local access only. My home system which is connected via the same SMC 4 port hub connects just fine to the internet.
I am using Windows Vista.
Any suggestion as what to try next?

Need better help then what the HP rep told me please.
I went to their website and chatted with a rep. He had me do a system restore which didn't work and said they only thing he could suggest was to do a full system recovery. Really don't want to do that. Can anybody offer a suggestion to fix my laptop (dv9627cl) so it sees my home network while using the Ethernet wire? My desktop using the same router has no problems and the laptop sees it fine using the wireless connection.
Thanks in advance.

1. I would like to advise that you firstly check that the cable is in working condition and that you should try with a new network cable.
2. turn the router off and check all the connections on it and your laptop to make sure everything is connected correctly.
3.Remove the network driver... BUT.! (Download a copy off another machine "Internet" of the Driver for your device) and Re-Install the driver.
4.Switch the router back on, and restart you device.
5.Try to Connect.

two people experiencing the same problem means HP must be bad, apparently.
Anyway, enough of this derailment.
First step is check your network card settings, you might be set to receive a static IP address.
Click start->type network->click on network and sharing center->on the right click on manage network connections
right click on your ethernet connection, and click properties
select Internet Protocol Version 4, click properties.
Is it set to a static IP or dynamic?
Change it to dynamic if it isn't already.
back at the properties window for LAN, UNcheck the box for Internet Protocol Version 6.
shut the notebook down, unplug ethernet cable.
power cycle modem and router for 2 minutes
turn notebook back on

I have exactly the same problem. My HP F755 laptop will not connect to internet and gives me "local only" on the wired connection. I have two locations, one with cable internet and the other with DSL. Both connections to internet work with other computers. This laptop will not work on either wired connection. I have done everything suggested by ISPs and also by replies to your post. Nothing works. I also can connect via wireless to internet, but not by wire. Looks like a common problem with HPs.
