Wireless LAN is not working on my HP Pavilion DV7-3165DX due to the touchstrip

I have an HP Pavilion DV7-3165DX and I got it brand new. In most cases I was able connect but sometimes, the powerstrip containing the "wireless enable" button, the blue/amber LED, would sometimes not work. Using wireless assisstant would show that the Wireless LAN is disabled because of the "wireless button" as shown in the picture below...

It asks to "press on wireless button" but the problem is that I can't, the touch strip does not work and my computer registers it as off. I've searched on the forums for any solutions, one of them used to work. It stated that it could be due to static electricity being stored in the laptop and to discharge it, to remove all power sources (battery/AC adapter) and to hold the power button for 30 seconds. That seems to not work now, so I tried other suggestions: updating/downloading the driver software for the powerstrip and the wireless adapter (Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter). I did so with no avail.

I am aware that the power setting could allow for the wireless adapter to be turned off in order to save power, but I have it set to "Maximum Performance."

I think the best solution for me would be to find a way to override the "wireless button" located on the powerstrip so that I can turn on the adapter. Currently, the "wireless button" acts as a physical "override switch" so all wireless communications could be turned on and off with only one button.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Please and Thank You!

Re: Wireless LAN is not working on my HP Pavilion DV7-3165DX due to the touchstrip

Hi

You have a couple of options as I see it please try these steps might help you to fix your issue.

1) Disconnect the Battery & Adapter then press & hold the power button on Notebook for 30 seconds then turn on the unit and check if the Wireless light turns on.

2) Go to Device manager then uninstall the wireless drivers from Network Adapter and restart the unit and check if the light turns on.

3) Try doing a system restore to the date where unit was working fine.

4) Please update the Bios & Wireless driver from HP website.

5) Click start in search type Recovery Manager then click on it select Yes on User access control then select I need immediate help then select Driver & application recovery select the wireless driver and install it then restart the unit.

6) If you are comfortable reseating the wireless card which will be on the back panel off your unit you could try this steps as well.

If still you have the same issue then you need to call HP Technical support and get the part replaced.

Let us know how it goes!

Re: Wireless LAN is not working on my HP Pavilion DV7-3165DX due to the touchstrip

Hello Manjunath,

Thanks for your very quick reply.

I followed all your possible options except number 3. I have too many programs that I use for work and for school, reinstalling them is worth more time and effort than just buying a USB wireless adapter,

I tried option number one, nothing happened.

I tried option two; nothing happened.

I have just updated the driver for the adapter, nothing.

I uninstalled the driver again, then reinstalled the original driver from date of purchase, nothing.

I already spent the better part of my morning taking my laptop apart. I removed all panels, and cleaned using compressed air. I then had to reseat the hard drive, cd-drive, and wireless adapter. I also reseated the troublesome touchstrip (which now is slightly more brightly illuminated) and the keyboard (removed to fully remove the powerstrip).

Sending my laptop in to get the part replaced would be impossible - work and school gets in the way.

Sorry to shoot down all the options and thanks for the help. However, I still believe that if I could override the "wireless button," I would be able to use Wifi. For example, the touchstrip also controls the master volume, however, it does not override the ability for me to go to the lower right of my screen and change the volume.

Thanks though!

Hi

Please check if the unit is still covered by HP Warranty so that they can replace the wireless card free of cost for you.

I just had the same problem and I fixed it. Go into the device manager and update the drivers of the first intel wireless wiki link. As soon as it finished updating it will say it was turned off. follow the promts on how the turn it on internally and it should be fixed.

Re: Wireless LAN is not working on my HP Pavilion DV7-3165DX due to the touchstrip

ive sent my hp to have it fixed after buying a heafty warnty and i got it back with no fix, first the hard drive warps due to "heating issue" witch is a common problem with this brand of laptops, personaly i think hp is practicing planned obsolescence. witch is a poor way of doing business if you ask me. i even went to the hp bulilding over at oregon this summer to fix this problem. and i just got the boot, and i was escorted from the property. i didnt even get to talk to anyone.

Re: Wireless LAN is not working on my HP Pavilion DV7-3165DX due to the touchstrip

For me I pulled the Laptop Battery, Pulled CMOS Battery, Flipped it back over and held the power button down for 30 seconds. Then I put the CMOS Battery back in (left laptop battery out for now) then booted up and it starting working! Light is now Blue. Hope this will work for someone else!! Thanks for all the ideas.
