8500A Plus - iPad (iOS 4.2.1) cannot find the printer

Have had a 8500A plus for a couple of weeks.  All works well.

Downloaded 4.2.1 onto iPad this morning (23 Nov) expecting to be able to print directly to the printer. However the iPad cannot "see" the printer.  Any ideas?

There are no "Product updates" available for the printer (I checked on the printer itself).  I take that to be similar to a firmware update?  I had read somewhere else that the 8500A may have a compatibility problem that prevents it connecting to iPads and needs a firmware update.  If so, is one out or is it still to come?

I am in New Zealand (if that makes any difference).

Hello,

Please check out this URL for list of HP's AirPrint compatible printers

http://www.hp.com/sbso/printing/mac/apple-airprint.pdf

There will be a firmware update coming soon for the Officejet 8500A that will enable AirPrint compatibility

Same here.  Downloaded the printopia app for Mac, and it works, but not always.  I'm a little disappointed as this was a feature that was promised in the press release for this printer, and of course it isn't working.  Come on HP, the SDK has been out for months.

Re: 8500A Plus - iPad (iOS 4.2.1) cannot find the printer

Rickster,

Based on that PDF link it's my understanding that the firmware update will be pushed automatically to our 8500A printers on December 27th. If there's any way to push this earlier to to some people (say, those of us who found this forum) for beta testing, let us know. I'm anxious to use this feature, and would love to test it out.

I'm not sure how many people really have 10.6.5 OSX, iPads and iPhone's 4.2.1, and 8500A's running in the wild right now, so it might be worth throwing it our way to see how it really performs out here in the real world.  I suspect a lot more people will have this combination of products by the end of the holiday season.

Thanks

Re: 8500A Plus - iPad (iOS 4.2.1) cannot find the printer

The irritating thing is that sites like this

http://www.allnewsmac.com/2010/09/20/hp-unveils-the-first-airprint-able-printers/

tout the service and then don't have it ready for the printer. Typical of HP these days unfortunately.

Re: 8500A Plus - iPad (iOS 4.2.1) cannot find the printer

I had the same problem with my officejet 7410 and trying to use the new update 4.2 on my iPad as well with "No printer found".  One of the message boards suggested to use Printopia at Printopia .com and they offer a software program for a 7 day trial which communicates with airprint.  I tried it and it works fine. After the 7 day trial the cost is around $9.00, which is very reasonable to me as oppose to buying a new printer just for this function. I hope this is helpful to you.
