Re: AirPrint problems

Checked earlier and it is likely the router, also a net gear unit

The router does seem to pass bonjour for an attached buffalo drive but not for the printer.

I have upgraded the router firmware and have contacted netgear and awaiting answer.

Your thread was great but in the end I have to use this router or go out and by a new one which I am not keen on doing.

Thanks

Re: AirPrint problems

Sorted

Found another forum which had direction

On the router you need to go to wireless setup and turn off wireless isolation and then setup wireless acces list where you put in all the mac addresses of equipment you want to connect. Not sure if isolation turnoff is required

They are listed if currently turned on and you can also add addresses manually

Only issue is a lot  of the list the router does not know the name of the kit for the mac address and you may need to check on each kit to make sure you don't give access to some other kit.

I added kit which I was not sure of, possibly the wii station.  But it is somewhat academic since the connecting devices still need to provide wap codes, assuming you have SID and WAP configured on the router.

You just have to make sure that when you introduce new kit into your wifi LAN you specify it's mac in the router table

P.s.  you will need to turn your iPad off and back on.  Mac of IPad wireless is in setup general

Thanks for your help

Give this a try on your router and let me know how you got on

Re: AirPrint problems

My router does not have 'Wireless Isolation', but doe have a 'Wireless Card Access List'. Reading the info on this on the router I can't see why it would work, it is only limiting the devices that can connect to the router wirelessly.

I have a few devices that connect here intermittently, and the iPad is not here most of the time, so I will do a test when possible and post the results.

If it does work I'll be more confused as to why a feature designed to increase security (limiting the allowed wireless devices) would reduce security (opening previously blocked protocols). But nothing would surprise me!

Re: AirPrint problems

Suriname,

When you say it works on everything but the iPad 3, which other devices does it work with ? Also, what is the make and model of your router ?

If I helped you at all it would be great if you clicked the blue kudos star!

Re: AirPrint problems

Just a quick update others may find useful:

I haev not had chance to test the Wireless Isolation setting, but suspect it is not the answer.

I have bought my mother a new router though. She had a TalkTalk branded D-Link which had terrible wireless performance, but did work with AirPrint (I took my printer to her house to test).

We bought a TP-Link TD-W8961ND, the wireless was a lot better, but AirPrint did not work (despite changing settings as advised by a FAQ on their site. After contacting their support I found that the TD-W8961ND v1 does not support AirPrint, but the v2 (released but not available from my supplier) did - according to them, and after changing settings!

After returning the TP-Link to the supplier, I decided to go with a D-Link DSL-2740R. this has equal wireless signal to the TP-Link, and works with AirPrint out of the box. Ither than entering her ADSL details and changing the SSID & key, I have left it as standard. I used WPS to connect the printer, and it worked first time.

So, she now has a router that definitely works, when she is ready to buy the printer at least I know we won't have this nightmare again.

I have never been a great fan of Apple, and although the issue here is specific to Apple's Bonjour protocol, I do not blame them so much. Personally I lay the issue with the router manufacturers (Netgear & TP-Link at least), for producing devices which are designed to route network traffic, but are actually blocking it.

They may say that this is part of the security, but when the source and destination are on your local network, and you have already disabled the firewall (which should only affect the external network) and all other relevant settings, the device is simply not doing its job - routing traffic.

Re: AirPrint problems

Suddenly, I can't print to my HP Laser Jet CM1415fnw AirPrint printer with any of my iPhones or iPads.  Says can't find printer.  The printer works fine from the PC.  It is setup as a wireless printer.  I am using a D-Link DIR-655 router.  I have uninstalled and re-installed Bonjour Services several times to no avail.  Can anyone help?

Re: AirPrint problems

HI kmmbstreet,

Have your tried to power cycle the router, printer, and iphone/ipad?

Unplug the router, turn off the printer and power off the devices then plug the router back in and let all the lights get back to normal. Then turn the printer back on and then the devices.

Re: AirPrint problems

We bought the printer about 6-8 months ago. It worked just fine out of the box.
