Hello A082692a,
First important question is, is it a real answering machine or something like a Voicemail service. With a real answering machine click HERE to see how to set up your fax and answering machine. Be awere of the fact that the message you record on your answering machine needs to be recording to several rules. But all this is explained on the page you can reach by clicking on the link above.
Voicemail service will most likely not work with the fax, but there are som e internet sites with thing you can try. A Google search on use a fax with voicemail will help.

Although I work for HP my posts and replies are my own

If you have a physical attached to EXT port of the printer then following settings should be followed:
On printer set "Number of Rings" to 6, "Answer Ring Pattern" to "All Rings", "Auto Answer" should be ON and on the answering machine set the "number of rings" to 4.
If you have voicemail service, then:
On printer set "Number of Rings" to 4, "Answer Ring Pattern" to either Single Ring or Double ring or Triple Ring (this has to be enabled by the phone service provider for your fax number) , "Auto Answer" should be ON and on the answering machine set the "number of rings" to 6.
