HP 7510: Can i scan to an OCR?

I have an HP 7510 Printer/Scanner. I would like to know if I can scan to an OCR output.

I get a pdf and a jpg when I press "Scan", but is is possible to get it to scan to OCR?

Thanks in advance.

Re: HP 7510: Can i scan to an OCR?

Hi Adam,

The HP Photosmart 7510 does not provide any OCR functionality within the HP Software.

You will have to use a 3rd party OCR software to get this feature.

If you Have Microsoft Office on your PC, some of the versions provide OCR functionality as part of the software:

  1. Microsoft OneNote within Office 2010
  2. MS Office Document Imaging and Scanning within Office 2003 or 2007.

Shlomi

Re: HP 7510: Can i scan to an OCR?

Hello, I have the same problem as Adam, and I've been using HP printers for years now and always have had this option.  I feel this is a very big problem, and even though I like the printer well enough, I might have to bring it back and return it for another printer that will give me the OCR option.  OneNote and Document scanning within the Office Suite leaves a lot to be desired in accuracy of their output.  I feel the exclusion of this necessary software is a bad move on HP's part and hope that they will offer a free download for a compatible software ASAP.

Please let me know if this problem will be addressed soon or I will have to migrate to another manufacturer for my printer needs, which is a shame, as it works fine for every other task but this.

Re: HP 7510: Can i scan to an OCR?

Hi all.    I ended up downloading free software called "FreeOCR V3.0".    It opens .pdf files, and image files and allows a quick export to text and a fast export to MSWord.   I operate using Windows 7(64bit), and Office2007 primarily.   No issues encountered and I now have the OCR function.

Hope that helps.

Re: HP 7510: Can i scan to an OCR?

Thanks, Adam.  I do have other software that does convert from PDF and will OCR, but it's still an extra step when all the other HP printers I've had to date will scan directly to OCR... just one step but it still annoys the heck out of me.  I will make a note of the software you spoke about, tho.  Thank you

Re: HP 7510: Can i scan to an OCR?

I just downloaded FreeOCR v4.2 and successfully scanned directly into it with the HP 7510. The characters were recognized well, but the page layout was lost in the process.

Re: HP 7510: Can i scan to an OCR?

Honor Student, Thanks!

FreeOCR works great. It's easy to use and scans directly into the HP 7510.

I don't have MS Word, but was able to cut and paste the text into Google Docs or any application.
