Why do multiple laptop connections block each others' connectivity?

HP 6000 Plus, XP

 

I set up my personal laptop and my work laptop to print to my HP 8600 printer. 1) If I print from my personal laptop, it disconnects (albeit temporarily) the VPN connection on my work laptop. 2) If I connect my work laptop to my company VPN, then I can longer print from my personal laptop. Why do these two situations occur?
