Why does the printer sometimes only preview and print part of an e-mail page?

Not sure why you're seeing this. What kind of email client are you using? I'm using Outlook and I have a Print Preview option. This option displays what my print job is going to look like before it prints. Do you have a print preview option? Are there any settings you can change that make it look right? Finally, can you better describe the type of email that only does a partial print?

i'm using firefox.  when the page only partially prints, the preview also partially shows

i'm not aware of controls to the above.  this printer is new (5 days) to me.  it's a reconditioned

one- could that have anything to do with it?

Are you using firefox to access a web based email account like gmail or yahoo? Or, are you using Thunderbrid? (mozilla's email client/news reader) Regardless, I too have had formatting issues when printing email from a web browser. I'm not sure why, but there are sometimes formatting issues when printing this way. Rest assured, this isn't an issue with your printer. I think you'll find that it prints fine from every other application.

i use gmail.  what do you do when the full page doesn't print and you need a hard copy?

Well, this is what I would do, not sure of a better way... First, I would set up my gmail account in an email client like Outlook. If you can't do that, then I would copy and paste the body of my email into a text editor like Word and print from there. I realize the later isn't ideal, but if you have to have a hard copy this will get you there. (assuming that your printer prints fine from Word and other applications)
