my hp officejet 6500a keeps giving me Paper Mismatch Error

I have a HP 6500A Plus (and use Windows XP)  I have tried to shut down and unplug and reconnect. I have also gone into the printer icon and made sure the Paper Format stated, "Plain" and it still will not print a document. Any suggestions?

Paper mismatch errors usually pertains to the paper size. Check to make sure the paper size set on the computer is the same as the paper size in the printer tray.

They both say "Tray 1" and set for Plain Paper. (81/2x11)

When I go to print out an email, it works.  When I try to print a document (MS Word, a FAX) it gives me the error.

The MS Word document you opened might have been set for Fax - legal size or a size other than 8.5x11. In Word look for page layout and make sure it is set for 8.5x11 (Letter).

It was set to "Letter" size paper.  Now, it doesn't even want to let me print an email.  The same error just reoccurs, no matter what I try to print.

This Printer has a firmware update that address the issue you seem to be having.

1. To update the firmware go to www.hp.com/support -Select Drivers & Software- enter 6500a plus for the product number

2. On the next page select your Operating system (windows xp)

3. Step two-select a download- click on the firmware- download and run the firmware update

To do the firmware update, you will need to be connected by usb.  If it is a wireless setup, just connect the usb cable to run the firmware, you do not have to install the printer by usb.

Thanks so much for the tip to update the firmware.  Everything works now.

I changed the settings to print photo quality, which worked just fine.  When I switched back to the standard settings, the paper mismatch error messages appeared. 

Now I'm able to print again!  Hurray.

This printer is GARBAGE.  Replaced it with an Epson today.  Nice work HP.
