If the copy does not work, it could be a hardware issue with the scanner mechanism.

Check the scanner bar functionality

Perform a visual test of the scanner mechanism to see if it is jammed.

  1. Remove any original documents or photos from the scanner glass.
  2. Lift the scanner lid slightly, and then press the Copy button or icon.
    • If the scanner light does not move or lits up, the scanner mechanism is likely jammed/broken.
  3. Please contact our HP Support team for Service Options as it could be a possible hardware issue:

    1) Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true

    2) Select your product type below.

    3) Enter the serial of your device.

    4) Select the country from the drop-down.

    5) Select the appropriate option based on your preference.

    6) Fill the web-form and proceed further.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

The printer can use Windows built-in drivers to print, but when it comes to scanning, a Full-featured HP driver must be installed. Following these steps may resolve this issue:

If at all you do not want to install the HP Full-featured drivers, you can always scan using HP Scan and Capture app which is the easiest way to scan.

Click here to Download and know more about HP Scan and Capture app.

Step 1: Clean uninstallation of Pre-installed HP drivers

  1.  In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
  2.  Select your HP Printer
  3.  Select Uninstall
  4.  In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
  5.  In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
  6.  Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
  7.  Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  8.  Click on the “Drivers” tab
  9.  Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
  10.  Select Ok
  11.  Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
  12.  Close Devices and Printers, restart the computer.

Step 2: Click here to download the HP Full-featured driver.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Now, double click on the printer icon on your desktop to Open HP Printer assistant page > click on Scan.

Try to Scan.

Let me know how this goes.

Unfortunately, I am still getting the driver error when.  "The scan driver is unable to communicate with the producte."  I have done this about 6 times over the last few days.  Unintalling and reinstalling doesn't work.  I don't get it.  I can print but I cannot copy or scan now???  Can you suggest an inexpensive hp inkjet printer compatable with windows 8?

@Bobbilyn

First, try making a copy on the printer.

Place a document on the scanner glass of the printer and hit the copy button > Start black copy

Check if the printer makes a copy. If it does, it means that the scanner/copier mechanism is working fine. proceed to the next step.

Did you try using HP Scan and Capture app which is the easiest way to scan.

It does not copy.  It does not scan.  Do you have any other suggestions?
