Hello, for some odd reason the internal speakers on my all in one HP desktop started making an awfully loud, static sound whenever I play any audio. It had been working just fine. I checked drivers for Realtek audio and I am up to date. I ran the hardware and sound tests via Control Panel and Supper Assistant and while it says the sounds checks out OK, the test feature creates the same loud static. Interestingly, when I plug in my external desktop speakers via the headphone jack on the side, the audio works fine!. That suggests to me that the driver is working but perhaps the internal speakers are bad? Perhaps an amplifier is kaput? I have never heard of speakers going bad, never had this happen. I am running Windows 11 64 bit and have been since February with no issues. Is this a hardware issue? One last point, the Sound Icon that normally is in the Task Bar tray is gone and there is no way for me to find it. Is there some glitch in my operating system? thanks in advance

Hi @JKarak

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how unsettling it must be to hear loud static instead of clear audio, especially when everything had been working fine before. You’ve already done the right checks with drivers and external speakers, and that effort helps narrow down the cause.

Let’s go through some focused steps together:

Step‑by‑step actions

Check playback device settings

  • Right‑click the speaker icon (if missing, see step 5 below).
  • Select “Sounds” → Playback tab.
  • Ensure “Speakers (Realtek Audio)” is set as the default device.

Test with Windows Sound settings

  • Go to Settings → System → Sound.
  • Under “Output,” select the internal speakers.
  • Click “Device properties” → “Test.”
  • If static persists here, it points to a hardware issue with the internal speakers.

Update audio drivers manually

  • Even if Windows reports drivers are up to date, reinstalling can help.
  • Visit HP’s support page for your desktop model and download the latest Realtek audio driver.
  • Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers

Run HP Audio Check

  • Open the HP App on your PC.
  • Select “Troubleshooting” → “Audio Check.”
  • This test can confirm whether the issue is hardware or software related.

Restore missing sound icon

  • Right‑click the taskbar → Taskbar settings.
  • Scroll to “Notification area” → “Turn system icons on or off.”
  • Toggle “Volume” to On.
  • This restores the sound icon if it disappeared.

Final check with external speakers

  • Since external speakers work fine, the driver and audio path are functioning.
  • If static continues only on internal speakers after reinstalling drivers and confirming settings, the internal speaker hardware or amplifier is likely at fault.

You’ve already done a lot of the right troubleshooting. If after reinstalling drivers and confirming playback settings the static persists only on the internal speakers, it strongly suggests a hardware fault in the speaker assembly.
