Hi @Tanmoy10

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for describing everything in such detail. I can only imagine how stressful this must be—especially when your system goes dark after what seemed like a routine update. You're not alone in this, and there are solid steps we can take to help bring your HP Spectre back to life.

From what you’ve shared:

The green screen followed by restarts often points to driver conflicts—commonly graphics-related.

The black screen on boot after removing a Windows update suggests that system files or boot configurations may have been damaged.

Since you were also working with Mali Plot in VS Code, which uses GPU resources, it's likely that a combination of Windows updates and GPU drivers caused the crash.

Let’s walk through steps to revive your Spectre, with the goal of recovering your data and restoring full function.

STEP-BY-STEP FIX FOR BLACK SCREEN AFTER WINDOWS UPDATE

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset (No Data Loss)

This simple step can often reset any stuck hardware states.

Power off the laptop completely.

Disconnect charger, and if possible, remove any external devices (USB, HDMI, etc.)

Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds.

Plug the charger back in and try powering it back on.

If nothing shows up, continue with the next step.

Step 2: Boot into Recovery Mode Using the Power Button Trick

Even if the screen is black, the recovery environment may still be available:

Turn off the laptop.

Press the power button to turn it on, and as soon as it starts, press and hold the power button again until it turns off.

Repeat this 3 times – on the 3rd attempt, Windows should try to load Recovery Mode.

If successful, you'll see "Preparing Automatic Repair" or "Diagnosing your PC".

Step 3: Use Advanced Startup Options

Once in Recovery Mode:

Choose Advanced Options > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options again.

From here, try the following in order:

a) System Restore

Try restoring to a point before the update was installed.

b) Startup Repair

This scans and fixes boot-level errors.

c) Uninstall Updates

If System Restore isn’t available, go to Uninstall Latest Quality Update and proceed.

d) Command Prompt Fix (Rebuild Boot Files)

If you want to manually repair boot files:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Then restart the PC.

Step 4: Disable Fast Startup from Safe Mode (if accessible)

From Advanced Options > Startup Settings > choose Enable Safe Mode with Networking.

Once inside Safe Mode:

Search for Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.

Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.

Uncheck Turn on fast startup.

Save changes.

This can help prevent future boot loop issues.

Step 5: Update Graphics Driver from Safe Mode (if you get in)

Since a green screen crash often points to a graphics driver failure, you’ll want to:

Open Device Manager.

Expand Display adapters.

Right-click your GPU and choose Uninstall device.

Reboot the system.

Once you're back in Windows normally, reinstall the correct graphics driver using HP’s support page.

HP Spectre Drivers and Software

If Recovery Mode Doesn’t Show:

You may need to use Windows 11 Installation Media from another PC.

Download Windows 11 Media Creation Tool

Create a bootable USB.

Insert into your Spectre and boot from USB (press Esc repeatedly at startup, then F9 for boot menu).

Choose Repair your computer instead of Install.

Proceed with the recovery steps from earlier.

If you need help creating recovery media, navigating command prompts, or deciding when to back up and reset, just let me know—I'll support you every step of the way.

You are very Welcome @Tanmoy10

Thanks for the detailed follow-up—and I can see you’ve been incredibly persistent. The fact that your HP Spectre now shows a black screen immediately on boot, even after trying recovery and bootable USB options, suggests that the system may be stuck in a corrupted UEFI/BIOS state or that the bootloader has been critically damaged.

The image you shared confirms a CMOS checksum error, which means the BIOS settings were reset—possibly due to a failed update, power interruption, or firmware conflict. This is a key clue.

Let’s walk through a deeper recovery strategy tailored to your situation:

Advanced Recovery for HP Spectre Black Screen + CMOS Checksum Error

1. Respond to the CMOS Checksum Prompt

When you see:

“The CMOS checksum is invalid…”

Choose F1 (CMOS Reset) rather than F2 (Reboot). This forces the system to reload default BIOS settings and may allow the boot process to continue.

Once reset:

  • Immediately press Esc or F10 during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Confirm:
    • Boot Mode is set to UEFI
    • Secure Boot is enabled
    • Fast Boot is disabled
  • Save and exit.

2. Try BIOS Recovery via Key Combo

If the system still shows a black screen:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release all keys and wait up to 60 seconds.

This triggers HP’s BIOS recovery routine. If successful, you’ll see a BIOS recovery screen.

3. Rebuild Bootloader from USB (If BIOS Loads)

If you can boot from USB:

  • Use the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool to create a fresh bootable USB.
  • Boot into it and choose Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Command Prompt.
  • Run:
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /scanos
    bootrec /rebuildbcd

This rebuilds the boot configuration and may restore access to Windows.

4. If All Else Fails: Clean Install

If recovery fails and BIOS is stable:

  • Boot from USB and choose Custom Install.
  • Back up data first using a Linux live USB (e.g., Ubuntu) if needed.
  • Delete all partitions and install Windows to unallocated space.

Why This Happened

The green screen crash during GPU-intensive work (Mali Plot in VS Code) followed by a Windows update likely triggered a graphics driver conflict or bootloader corruption. The CMOS checksum error confirms that BIOS settings were reset—possibly mid-update.

You’ve already done everything right, and your persistence is impressive. Let’s get your system back to full strength.
