I bought a brand new HP OmniBook 5 flip 14 in August 2025, and I started noticing there was a flickering on the screen in the right-hand corner only. This flickering would disappear as fast as it would appear. I checked for windows update and updated any outstanding updates needed.  I decided to record the screen to see if I could capture what it was that was flickering on the screen.  And finally saw this transparent black square. Please help me fix this issue.

Hi @Neekii

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for already updating Windows and capturing the flicker—your attention to detail is appreciated.

To resolve the flickering and transparent black square on your HP OmniBook 5 Flip 14 screen, start by updating graphics drivers, disabling hardware acceleration, and checking background apps. These steps often restore smooth display performance.

Step 1: Update Graphics Drivers

  1. Press Windows + X, select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click your Intel or AMD graphics device and choose Update driver > Search automatically.
  4. Alternatively, download the latest graphics driver from HP’s official site:
    HP Software and Driver Downloads
Enter your exact OmniBook 5 Flip 14 model and install the display driver listed.

Step 2: Disable Hardware Acceleration (for apps like browsers or Office)

  1. Open Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to Settings > System.
  3. Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Restart the app and observe if the flicker disappears.

Step 3: Check for Background Apps or Overlays

  • Some apps with screen overlays (e.g., screen recorders, performance monitors) can cause flickering artifacts.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Review Startup and Processes tabs for any overlay or enhancement tools.
  • End task or disable any non-essential apps temporarily.

Step 4: Adjust Display Refresh Rate

  1. Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings.
  2. Check the Refresh rate—set it to 60 Hz or the recommended value.
  3. Apply changes and test the screen again.

Step 5: Run HP App Diagnose & Fix

  • Open the HP App on your laptop.
  • Select your device and click Diagnose & Fix.
  • This tool performs a full scan and repairs display-related issues automatically.

Step 6: Perform Clean Boot (to isolate software conflicts)

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Under Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  3. Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
  4. Disable all startup items, restart the laptop, and observe the display.

These steps should help restore a crisp, uninterrupted display. That flickering square often stems from a background process or driver conflict, and once cleared, the screen feels refreshingly stable again.

Thank you very much for your quick responses and help. I have try all your steps and I did spotted OMEN gaming hub had an overlay running in the background which I have now uninstall. I  toggle off the game overly in the EA app as well. I really hope this resolves this issue. Thank you very much again.

That’s excellent progress—you’ve done the right thing by tracking down those overlays.

Since you’ve already uninstalled OMEN Gaming Hub and disabled the EA overlay, here are a couple of follow‑up checks that can help ensure the issue is fully resolved:

  • Restart the system after uninstalling/turning off overlays to clear any lingering processes.

  • Check background apps: In Windows Task Manager, confirm no overlay services (like Xbox Game Bar, Discord overlay, or GeForce Experience overlay) are still running.

  • Graphics driver refresh: Update or reinstall your GPU driver from HP Support or directly from Intel/NVIDIA/AMD depending on your configuration. Overlays often hook into graphics drivers, so a clean update can stabilize things.

  • Windows notifications/assist features: Disable “Focus Assist” or any third‑party screen annotation tools if you use them, just to rule out conflicts.

If the square doesn’t reappear after these steps, you’ve nailed the fix. If it does, the next step would be to test in Safe Mode or with a clean boot to confirm no hidden background service is causing it.

You’ve already done the hardest part—isolating the overlay. Now it’s just about making sure nothing else is sneaking in.

Cheers!

I am back here again. I have tried all methods above; however, the flickering is still occurring.  At this point, I feel like I purchased a laptop with issues and was sold as "brand new". I shouldn't have these issues with an item that I had for nearly 5 months and was supposed to be "brand new".  I am really disappointed.
