HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 inch Mobile Workstation PC (AY8K2AV)

Graphics Driver sp158763 Fails to Install on HP ZBook Ultra G1a

Product Information:

  • Model: HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14-inch Mobile Workstation PC

  • Processor: AMD RYZEN AI MAX+ PRO 395

  • Graphics: AMD Radeon 8060S

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (Fully Updated)

Summary of Issue: The official HP graphics driver package sp158763 for the ZBook Ultra G1a fails to install. The installer application starts but exits silently after a few seconds without displaying any error messages or launching the installation wizard. The system retains the original, older graphics driver.

Driver & BIOS Information:

  • Current Installed Driver: Version 24.20.74.01 (Original shipping driver)

  • Target Driver (Failing): Version 32.0.12074.1002 (from package sp158763)

  • System BIOS: Version 01.03.00 (Successfully updated and verified)

Expected Behavior: Running sp158763.exe should launch the AMD driver installation wizard and update the system's graphics driver to version 32.0.12074.1002.

Actual Behavior: The installer process (hpup.exe) starts, but the main installation wizard never appears. The process terminates silently in approximately 5-6 seconds. No error messages are displayed on screen. The system retains the original driver (24.20.74.01).

Analysis of the installer log file (C:\SWSetup\sp158763\HPUP_*.log) shows that the Install.cmd script is called but exits after only one second with Exit Code 0. This indicates a "successful" silent exit, likely due to a failed internal prerequisite check within the script itself. Manually running Install.cmd from an administrator command prompt confirms this behavior.

Troubleshooting Steps Already Performed: The following steps have been taken in an attempt to resolve the issue, with no success:

  1. Clean Installation: Used Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Safe Mode to completely remove all existing driver remnants.

  2. Offline Installation: Disconnected the machine from the internet entirely before attempting installation to prevent interference from Windows Update.

  3. Administrative Privileges: Ran the sp158763.exe installer using the "Run as administrator" option.

  4. Updated System BIOS: Updated the laptop's BIOS to the latest available version on the HP support site (01.03.00) and verified the update was successful via msinfo32.

  5. Updated Operating System: Ensured Windows 11 is fully up to date by installing all available updates from Windows Update, including all optional and .NET updates.

  6. Direct Script Execution: Manually ran the Install.cmd script from an elevated command prompt, which confirmed the silent exit behavior.

This issue appears to be a bug or an unstated dependency within the sp158763 installer package. Please advise on a resolution or provide an alternative driver package.
