Hi and thank you in advance for reading or replying to my message.

Someone please help me. Is there a way to change the coin batteries (CR2032) without creating dead pixels on the display on a HP 10bII finacial calculator?

Is there a way to fix the display that has gotten messed up from getting the batteries changed? I now have 2 of these calculators that has a messed up screen.

How does this happen?  Theres got to be a way to prevent this from happening.

Hi @JTCashman,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out. We understand how frustrating it is when a simple battery replacement causes display issues on your HP 10bII financial calculator. We’re here to help.

About Changing the CR2032 Batteries

The HP 10bII should normally allow battery replacement without damaging the display. However, applying too much pressure on the LCD area or the internal flex connectors during battery removal or insertion can sometimes cause:

  • Faint or missing segments
  • Dark spots
  • “Dead-pixel–like” lines

These symptoms can appear if the internal LCD contact strip gets slightly displaced during the process.

Basic Steps You Can Try

You may attempt the following gentle checks:

1. Reseat the batteries

Sometimes the calculator only needs a clean restart:

  1. Remove both CR2032 batteries.
  2. Wait 30–60 seconds.
  3. Reinstall the batteries firmly, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Press [ON] + [PMT] simultaneously to reset the calculator.

2. Check for display contrast

If the screen looks faint or uneven:

  • Press [ON] and repeatedly press [ + ] to increase contrast.
  • Press [ – ] to decrease contrast.

3. Gently press around the display frame

Very light pressure around the edges (not on the glass itself) can sometimes re-seat the LCD contact strip, but do not press hard, as this can worsen the issue.

If any of these steps do not restore the display, then the LCD contacts may have shifted or been damaged.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
