I have a new computer and have an external hard drive connected to it. I’m trying to download a pdf file from the external hard drive and it is both taking an exorbitant amount of time to do so and when it does it comes out as a Google pdf file and is rejected by the website I’m trying to load to.

@BryanVP, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your Downloading files!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

There could be several reasons why downloading a PDF file from your external hard drive is taking a long time, and why the file is coming out as a Google PDF file and being rejected by the website you are trying to upload to. Here are a few steps to troubleshoot these issues:

Slow Download Speed

Check Connection: Ensure your external hard drive is properly connected to your computer. If using a USB connection, try switching ports or using a different cable.

Performance of External Hard Drive: If the external hard drive is old or heavily used, it might be slow. Consider running a diagnostic check to see if there are any hardware issues.

Computer Performance: Ensure your computer is not running too many processes simultaneously. Close unnecessary applications to free up system resources.

Incorrect PDF Format

Direct File Access: Access the PDF directly from the file explorer rather than downloading it through a browser. Right-click on the file and use the "Open with" option to select a PDF viewer like Adobe Acrobat instead of Google Chrome.

  • Windows: Right-click the PDF > Open with > Choose a default program (e.g., Adobe Acrobat).
  • Mac: Right-click the PDF > Open with > Other (e.g., Preview).

Save as PDF: If the file is being opened in Google Chrome, it might automatically save as a Google PDF. Ensure you save the file correctly:

  • Open the PDF in a PDF reader.
  • Save the file specifically as a PDF, choosing the location carefully on your computer rather than directly through the browser.

File Format Conversion: If the file format appears to be altered, try reconverting it using a PDF tool like Adobe Acrobat or online PDF conversion tools.

Compatibility with Upload Websites

Check File Size and Format: Ensure the file meets the upload criteria of the website, such as file size, format, and naming conventions.

Re-save and Re-name: Save the PDF file again with a different name, ensuring the file extension remains .pdf.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
