@AFSeals, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

If your HP laptop is downloading duplicate copies of the same document, it’s likely due to how your browser or download manager is handling file names. Here are a few steps you can take to prevent or manage duplicate downloads:

Use a Browser That Warns About Duplicate Files

Most modern browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox will automatically rename duplicate downloads (e.g., document(1).pdf, document(2).pdf) but do not notify you by default.

To get notified or prevent duplicates:

Chrome:

  • Go to Settings > Downloads
  • Enable “Ask where to save each file before downloading”
  • This lets you choose the location and see if the file already exists.

Edge:

  • Go to Settings > Downloads
  • Enable “Ask me what to do with each download”

Firefox:

  • Go to Settings > General > Files and Applications
  • Under Downloads, choose “Always ask you where to save files”

This way, you’ll be prompted before a file is saved, and you can avoid duplicates.

Check Your Downloads Folder

Sometimes, duplicate downloads happen because the same file is downloaded multiple times unintentionally. You can:

  • Open File Explorer
  • Navigate to Downloads
  • Sort by Name or Date Modified
  • Delete unnecessary duplicates manually

Use a File Management Tool

You can use third-party tools like Duplicate Cleaner Free or CCleaner to scan and remove duplicate files from your system.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
