When I switched my laptop on this morning it took me to a page inviting me to run diagnostics. I don't think it reported a problem that I can remember. I ran the Fast diagnostics option which is support to take 1-3 minutes. After 10 minutes it was still running. It said I could cancel by hitting the esc key but that didn't work and the cursor track pad was also disabled.

In the end I powered off and on and the machine seems to be working but I'm worried there could be a fault. What action should I take and why did the machine go to the diagnostics screen on startup if there isn't a problem ?

Hi @AJRB,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Great question! Here’s what’s happening and what you should do: HP laptops automatically launch HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI when:

  • The system detects an unexpected shutdown or boot anomaly.
  • A previous boot attempt failed or was interrupted.
  • Sometimes, after a Windows update or power surge, even if no hardware fault exists.

It’s a precautionary measure, not always an indication of a serious problem.

Why Did Fast Test Hang?

The Fast Test usually takes 1–3 minutes, but if:

  • The trackpad and Esc key were unresponsive,
  • And the test didn’t finish after 10 minutes, …it suggests the diagnostics environment froze. This can happen due to:
  • Corrupted UEFI diagnostics module
  • Or a temporary firmware glitch

What You Should Do Now

  1. Run Diagnostics Again
    • Restart → Press Esc repeatedlyF2 → Run System Tests (Fast Test first, then Extensive if needed).
    • If it completes and reports “Passed,” your hardware is fine.

  2. Update HP Diagnostics & BIOS
  3. Check Windows Event Logs
    • Press Windows + X → Event Viewer → System.
    • Look for critical errors around the time of the boot issue.

  4. Run HP Support Assistant
    • Open HP Support Assistant → Check for updates → Install all recommended updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
