Device manager showing Firmware- System Firmware error....This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Firmware update failed due to system authentication

I have scanned for driver updates Get message Best driver for your device already installed.

I am thinking this may be due to the fact that my product's serial number matches a very old Compaq model on file with you folks that I have never owned.  When I try to come online to get support, I have to manually enter in HP Envy x360 2-in-1 Laptop 16-ad0xxx.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi @Obi636

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for laying out the situation so clearly—it’s understandably frustrating when your system firmware throws errors and the update process doesn’t cooperate. The authentication error and Code 10 in Device Manager likely stem from a failed BIOS or firmware update. You can resolve this by manually reinstalling the correct firmware and clearing any update remnants.

Let’s walk through a few precise steps to help your HP Envy x360 16-ad0xxx get back on track.

Uninstall the faulty firmware entry from Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Firmware > System Firmware.
  • Right-click and choose Uninstall device.
  • Restart your laptop. This clears the failed firmware instance.

Download and install the correct BIOS manually

  • Visit the HP Envy x360 16-ad0xxx Software and Drivers page.
  • Select Windows 11 as your OS.
  • Under BIOS, download the latest version available.
  • Right-click the downloaded file and choose Run as administrator.
  • Follow on-screen instructions and allow the system to reboot.

Clear pending firmware updates from Windows Update history

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update History.
  • Look for any failed BIOS or firmware updates.
  • If listed, go to Settings > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, and run Windows Update Troubleshooter to clear remnants.

Disable automatic firmware updates temporarily

  • Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options.
  • Under Optional Updates, avoid installing firmware updates until the manual BIOS install is successful.

Verify BIOS version after reboot

  • Press Esc during startup and choose F10 for BIOS Setup.
  • Check the BIOS version listed at the top.
  • Confirm it matches the version you manually installed.

Run HP diagnostics via HP App

  • Download the HP App for Windows.
  • Open the app, select your laptop, and run Diagnose & Fix under Support.
  • This checks for lingering firmware issues and confirms system health.

Let me know how the BIOS update goes and whether the Code 10 clears. If the issue persists, we can explore deeper cleanup steps or driver rollbacks.
