Welcome to HP Support Community, @tigermelon

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

1. Restart the Computer

  • A simple restart can sometimes resolve hardware recognition issues.

2. Check Device Manager

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager.
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Look for entries with a yellow exclamation mark (indicates a driver issue).
  • Right-click the device → Update driver.

3. Adjust USB Power Management Settings

  • Right-click each USB Root Hub → Properties → Power Management tab.
  • Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”

4. Uninstall and Reinstall USB Drivers

  • Right-click each USB device → Uninstall device.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Windows will reinstall drivers automatically.

5. Test USB Devices

  • Try multiple USB devices to rule out a faulty device.
  • Test the devices on another computer.

6. Inspect Physical USB Ports

  • Check for dust, debris, or bent pins inside the ports.
  • Use a flashlight if necessary.
  • Avoid using excessive force when inserting devices.

7. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings

  • Enter BIOS/UEFI during startup (F10, Del, or Esc).
  • Ensure all USB ports are enabled.
  • Look for Legacy USB Support or USB Configuration options.

8. Run Windows Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters → Hardware and Devices.
  • Follow on-screen instructions.

9. System Restore / Rollback Drivers

  • If USB ports stopped working after a recent update:
  • Go to Device Manager → USB device → Properties → Driver tab → Roll Back Driver.
  • Or perform a System Restore to a point when USB ports were working.

10. Update Chipset and USB Controller Drivers

  • Visit your laptop/PC manufacturer’s website.
  • Download and install the latest chipset or USB controller drivers.

11. Check for Windows Updates

  • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Check for updates.
  • Sometimes Microsoft releases patches for USB issues.

12. Power Cycle the Computer

  • Shut down the computer completely.
  • Unplug the power cord (and remove the battery if possible).
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect power and turn on.

13. Check for Conflicting Software

  • Some third-party software (like USB hub utilities, antivirus, or virtualization tools) can block USB detection.
  • Temporarily disable or uninstall them.

14. Test in Safe Mode

  • Boot into Safe Mode to check if USB works.
  • If it works in Safe Mode, a software conflict is likely.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
