We were getting an error about the old battery.... it was not holding a charge but if we were plugged in things ran fine.   We purchased a new battery, installed it.  But the machine would not power back up.   So we put the old battery back in and still the machine would not power back up again.

While being plugged in, the light near the cord does not indicate there is power.  We checked the outlet and all is good there.  What else might we check.

Hi @tr3ntbuck, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Your HP Envy 17 is refusing to power on? That's definitely a cause for concern! Let's try to bring it back to life.

Hard Reset:

  • Unplug the power cord and remove the battery.
  • Hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord (without the battery) and try turning on the laptop.

Check the Power Adapter:

  • Ensure the power adapter is working by testing it with another compatible device, if possible.
  • Inspect the power cord and adapter for any visible damage.

Reset the Battery Driver:

  • Connect the battery and power on the laptop.
  • Open Device Manager (search for it in the Start menu).
  • Expand the "Batteries" section.
  • Right-click on "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" and select "Uninstall".
  • Shut down the laptop, remove the battery and power adapter, then hold the power button for 1 minute.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then turn on the laptop.

Check for Loose Connections:

  • Ensure the battery is properly seated in its compartment.
  • Check for any loose or disconnected internal cables.

Perform a Battery Test:

  • Turn on the laptop and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  • Press F2 to open the System Diagnostics.
  • Select "Component Tests" and then "Battery" to run a battery test

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
