Hello everyone,

I’m facing an issue with my HP laptop that suddenly shut down and now it’s not powering on. I’ve tried the following steps:

  • Disconnected the charger and removed the battery

  • Held the power button for 30 seconds (hard reset)

  • Tried a different power outlet

  • Checked the charging adapter

There is still no display or power light response.

I work in a temporary site office setup where power fluctuations are common. In fact, we use portable office cabins for our field operations, similar to setups like this: (edited)(portable office & site cabin solutions). Because of unstable electricity, I suspect voltage fluctuation may have affected the motherboard or power IC.

Has anyone experienced similar issues due to unstable site power conditions? Could this be a motherboard failure, or should I try BIOS recovery first?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi @Building3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Which HP laptop model are you using?
  • When you press the power button, do you see any signs of life (fan spin, LED blink, charging light)?
  • Did the shutdown happen while plugged in, or on battery power?
  • Have you tried removing all external devices (USB drives, docking stations, etc.) before powering on?

Troubleshooting steps to try:

  • Check Power LED & Adapter: Plug in the charger and look for the charging LED. If it doesn’t light up, the issue could be with the adapter or power circuit.
  • Perform a Hard Reset Again: Disconnect charger, hold the power button for 30–40 seconds, then reconnect only the charger and try powering on.
  • BIOS Recovery Attempt: On many HP laptops, pressing Windows key + B while holding the power button can trigger BIOS recovery. If the BIOS was corrupted during a power fluctuation, this may help.
  • Test with Another Adapter: If possible, try a known-good HP adapter to rule out charger failure.
  • External Monitor Test: Connect to an external display to check if the laptop powers on but the internal screen isn’t responding.

I hope this helps.
