Dear community

Is someone experienced in installing a regular HDD into the 40L omen?

In particular, do i need to buy sata cable, or can i just start opening the tower?

Hope to hear or see some instruction!

Cheers

Hi @Dadaball

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for raising this—installing an HDD into the HP Omen 40L GT21-0615nd is absolutely doable, and it’s great that you’re approaching it with care. Let’s walk through everything you need to know before diving into the tower.

Do You Need to Buy a SATA Cable?

Yes, in most cases you will need to purchase a SATA data cable. The Omen 40L typically includes SATA power cables pre-routed from the PSU, but SATA data cables are not bundled unless the system was shipped with an HDD pre-installed. So before opening the case, make sure you have:

  • A SATA data cable (standard 7-pin)
  • A compatible 3.5" or 2.5" HDD
  • A mounting bracket or tray if using a 2.5" drive

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Here’s a structured walkthrough to help you install the HDD safely:

Power Down and Unplug

  • Shut down the PC completely and disconnect all cables.

Open the Side Panel

Locate the Drive Bay

Install the HDD

Connect the Cables

  • Plug the SATA power cable from the PSU into the drive.
  • Connect the SATA data cable from the drive to an available SATA port on the motherboard.

Reassemble and Boot

  • Replace the side panel and reconnect all cables.
  • Power on the system and enter Windows.

Initialize the Drive

  • Open Disk Management (Win + X > Disk Management)
  • Locate the new drive, right-click, and choose Initialize, then format it as needed.
  • This is also covered in Additional HDD Upgrade on HP Omen Desktop around the 4-minute mark.

Final Notes

  • If your drive isn’t detected, double-check both cable connections and BIOS settings.
  • Avoid forcing any components—Omen towers are designed for tool-less upgrades, but alignment matters.
  • If using a 2.5" HDD or SSD, confirm bracket compatibility before mounting.

You're on the right track—this upgrade is one of the most satisfying and straightforward ways to expand your system.
