Hi @Caracalla,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Which exact port on your Omni Studio X you are connecting the dock to (USB-C, USB-A,) ?
  • Does the Omni Studio X list “Thunderbolt” support in its specifications, or is it standard USB-C only?
  • When you connect the dock, do you see any response in Windows (device detected, charging, or error message)?
  • Are you primarily trying to use the dock for power delivery, external displays, or peripherals?

Suggested Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check Port Capabilities
    • Not all USB-C ports support Thunderbolt protocols. If your Omni Studio X has USB-C without Thunderbolt, the dock may not function fully. It might only provide limited charging or USB passthrough.
  2. Test with Basic USB Devices
    • Connect a simple USB device (like a mouse or flash drive) through the dock to see if any functionality is available.
  3. Update Drivers and Firmware
    • Use HP Support Assistant to check for system updates. Sometimes dock compatibility requires the latest BIOS or chipset drivers.
  4. Dock Compatibility
  • The HP G6 Thunderbolt 4 Dock is designed for systems with Thunderbolt support. On non-Thunderbolt systems, functionality is limited or unsupported. In such cases, a USB-C docking station (non-Thunderbolt) may be a better fit.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply it’s much appreciated. I purchased the dock to simply connect peripherals and potentially more screens one day but at the moment primarily things like chargers, usb drives portable drives etc.

when plugging it into the usbc port I get a message from windows saying that it’s unsupported . After some research I realised it may be the drivers as you mentioned however when I downloaded the drivers I was not able to get the pc to recognise the dock.

I called up hp tech support and they had me download image assistant but it did not work something about only available on a business account.

From what understand  even though my pc doesn’t have thunderbolt it has display alt mode which is enough to have the dock function but I have no idea how to install the drivers.

maybe it’s worth returning it for another device?

thanks again for the reply.

Hi @Caracalla,

I completely understand how frustrating this must be, You’re right that your system’s USB‑C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode should allow certain docking functions, but the G6 Thunderbolt 4 Dock is primarily designed for systems with Thunderbolt capability. That’s why Windows is flagging it as unsupported. Still, before deciding to return it, here are a few additional troubleshooting steps you could try:

  • Check BIOS/firmware updates: Visit the HP support page for your Omni Studio X and make sure the BIOS and chipset drivers are fully up to date. Sometimes dock recognition depends on these updates.
  • Install HP Dock Drivers manually: Instead of relying on Image Assistant, download the dock’s driver package directly from the HP support site and run the installer as administrator.
  • Test with another USB‑C port (if available): Some systems have multiple USB‑C ports, but only certain ones support DisplayPort Alt Mode. Switching ports can make a difference.
  • Try a clean boot: Boot Windows with minimal startup programs (using msconfig) and then connect the dock. This can help rule out conflicts with third‑party software.
  • Check Device Manager: After plugging in the dock, open Device Manager and look under “Universal Serial Bus controllers” or “Other devices.” If the dock appears with a yellow warning icon, right‑click and try “Update driver.”

If after these steps the dock still isn’t recognized, then returning it for a USB‑C dock that doesn’t require Thunderbolt may be the most practical solution.

I hope this helps.
