Hi @mollygraham5

This situation typically indicates that the computer is unable to locate the operating system on your hard drive. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:

  1. Check Boot Order:

    • Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup by pressing the appropriate key during startup (often F10, F2, ESC, or DEL).
    • Navigate to the Boot menu and ensure that your hard drive is listed as the first boot device.
    • Save any changes and exit the BIOS setup.
  2. Verify Hard Drive Connection:

    • If you're comfortable working inside your computer, power off and disconnect all cables.
    • Open the case and check if the cables connected to the hard drive are secure and properly connected.
  3. Run Hardware Diagnostics:

    • HP computers often come with built-in diagnostic tools. Restart the computer and immediately press F2 to access HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    • Run the "System Tests" to check for issues, especially focusing on "Hard Drive Check."
  4. Repair Windows Startup:

    • If you have a Windows installation or recovery media (USB or DVD), insert it into your computer.
    • Boot from the installation media and select "Repair your computer" when prompted.
    • Choose "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced options" > "Startup Repair" to attempt to fix startup problems.
  5. Restoring from Recovery Partition (if available):

    • On some HP models, pressing F11 during startup can bring up the recovery environment, allowing you to restore the system to a previous state without external media.
  6. Check for Physical Damage:

    • If the hard drive has failed, it may need to be replaced. If your diagnostics indicate a hardware failure, consider seeking professional repair services or contacting HP support if the system is under warranty.
