Hi @Tshepadep

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP laptop is experiencing a boot issue, where the screen remains black, and the fan is running. This could be caused by hardware or software problems.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter (without the battery) and try turning the laptop back on.

2. Check for Display Issues

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor using an HDMI or VGA cable. If the external monitor displays correctly, the issue might be with your laptop's screen or its connection.
  • If the external monitor also shows nothing, the problem could be related to the graphics card or motherboard.

3. Reset the BIOS

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect all peripherals.
  • Press and hold the Windows key + B key + Power button for 30 seconds. Release the power button first, then the other keys.
  • This resets the BIOS and might help resolve boot issues.

4. Run Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart the laptop and press F2 repeatedly during startup to access HP's diagnostic tools.
  • Run tests for the display, memory, and hard drive to identify any faults.

5. Check for Error Codes

  • If the power button or caps lock key is blinking, count the number of blinks. These are diagnostic codes that can help identify the issue. You can refer to HP's support page for more details on interpreting these codes.

6. Update or Reinstall BIOS

  • If you can access the BIOS (press F10 during startup), check for any updates. You can download the latest BIOS version from the HP Support page.

If this solution hits the spot, please come back and click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left of the public post, as that would make our day! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
