My PC is almost 3 yrs old & while I'm aware that HP apps are running in the background, factoryapps.ppkg is a 5.99GB file in C:/Recovery/Customizations that I would like to delete to free up additional space.  There are few, if any apps other than those in MS Windows that were included in the factory install that I use.  In fact I had an image taken from from previous Windows 10 PC to minimize the time needed to reinstall all the other apps that I had on the PC that this 1 replaced.   Thank you for your assistance.

Hi @SD-101

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how tempting it is to reclaim nearly 6GB of space, especially when you feel those factory-installed apps aren’t adding value to your daily use. Thank you for already checking what’s running in the background—that awareness makes troubleshooting much smoother.

Let’s go through this carefully so you know the implications before making changes.

The factoryapps.ppkg file in C:/Recovery/Customizations is part of the recovery environment. It contains the customization package that restores HP applications and drivers if you ever perform a factory reset or recovery.

Deleting it will not affect your current Windows installation, but it will remove the ability to restore the system back to its original factory state with HP’s included software.

Safe approach before deleting

Create a full system backup

  • Use Windows’ built-in Backup or File History to safeguard your personal files.
  • Optionally, create a system image so you can restore your current setup if needed.

Check available recovery options

  • Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  • Confirm that you have other recovery methods available (such as Windows reset or your own system image).

Decide based on your usage

  • If you rely only on Windows and your own apps, and you don’t plan to use HP’s factory recovery again, deleting the file is safe.
  • If you want to keep the option of restoring the PC to its original HP configuration, keep the file.

Alternative to deletion

  • You can move the file to an external drive for safekeeping. This way, you free up space on your PC but still retain the ability to restore factory apps later if desired.
